Sometimes our work serves as a canvas for the display of our client’s personality, vision, and craftsmanship.
The design of this addition to an owner-built existing cabin was always meant to leave room for their interpretive details–like this whimsical take on unique cladding–a quilt-like assembly of wood offcuts, inserts, and found objects. We continue to be surprised and impressed with the owner’s vision for the project, and we celebrate the creativity and playfulness that buildings can have when they don’t take themselves too seriously.

A big thank you to the Town of Leesburg for hosting their second annual Preservation Day Friday. It’s inspiring to see the Town’s commitment to its historic buildings and realizing their value. The Town’s team shared info about the evolution of Leesburg's architectural styles, proper maintenance of historic brick structures, and exciting upcoming events marking Virginia 250. Bonus: we discovered the Campaign for Historic Trades — an incredible resource for training and connecting with the skilled tradespersons who make preservation possible.

The finish materials are well underway at the Loudoun Passive Solar House. Stucco, stained
cypress wood siding, and limestone clad the volumes. Large overhangs for passive solar sun
shading are constructed of white oak. Inside the dining area and kitchen, the ceiling is
constructed of a hand-crafted timber frame, with large-format porcelain tile gracing the floor and
floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the room with light. We’re excited to see forms and volumes
come together with material selections made alongside thoughtful clients.

Construction continues on Honey Hill! The screened porch and pool area are framed up. The entry’s immense glass is in place – fixed glazing to the view and sliding, pocketing doors which allow a seamless opening onto the screened pool-porch. We develop 3D models and renderings throughout the design process. They allow thoughtful conversations with our clients to clarify choices, refine spaces, and align priorities.

More-than-a-screened porch: This is a full outdoor living room along with dining and kitchen. We’re very excited about how it’s coming together! 🏡

We designed this addition to seamlessly connect our clients’ existing living room and kitchen to the outdoors, opening up to a gorgeous rolling meadow and creek beyond. Every detail was thoughtfully considered — from motorized retractable screens tucked into concealed recessed pockets, to beautiful white oak timber framing and ceilings.

So grateful to be working alongside an amazing team on this one. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to completion!🌿

Yesterday was picture perfect for a walking tour of mass timber buildings in Washington DC! We toured the Arena Stage Center for American Theater, the Southwest Public Library, and 80 M Street office building to see how each of these projects utilized mass timber in its construction!
Thank you to for a great, informative afternoon!
