🐝 A plump bumblebee, dusted in golden pollen, has buried itself deep inside a snowy tubular bloom of a Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) cultivar.

🌸Only its fuzzy black & yellow hiney remains visible, wiggling gently as it probes for the rich nectar hidden at the base of the flower. The elegant, foxglove-like corolla perfectly cradles the bee, forcing close contact with the anthers & stigma - a masterful design that ensures the bee emerges well powdered & ready to pollinate the next blossom.

🌿Spirea is one of the easiest flowering shrubs you'll ever grow and now until the 25th it’s 20% off!

Whether it's the soft pink flower covered mounds of 'Little Princess' or the brilliant orange new growth and vibrant blooms of 'Double Play Doozie', spirea delivers season-long color with very little maintenance.

🌸These compact shrubs fit beautifully along foundations, walkways, mixed perennial borders, & mass plantings, where they provide reliable structure and long-lasting interest. As the creamy white flower clusters fade, they give way to a stunning transformation: hundreds of tiny lime-green drupes emerge like miniature planets on vibrant reddish peticels. The vivid contrast is breathtaking - each umbel a living galaxy, with young berries (drupes) as glowing green stars against a cosmic backdrop of deepening crimson, promising the dark, juicy fruits that birds will soon feast upon. Few native plants blend such generous wildlife value with such poetic, ever-changing beauty.

This is our native elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) - an incredible ecological powerhouse and a quiet masterpiece of beauty. It supports dozens upon dozens of bird species by providing vital summer & fall food through its abundant, nutrient-rich berries, along with nesting cover & insect-attracting blooms that fuel even more birds in spring.

The reddish coloration of the stems and peticels is a wonderful example of the beauty of chemistry - anthocyanins begin accumulating more & more in the stems & developing fruit. As the drupes ripen to dark purple-black for the rest of the season, the overall cluster continues to be a visual standout in the landscape.

These towering shrubs works wonderfully well along a wood line, where the humungous flower umbels and galaxies of developing fruit illuminate the darkness behind them. Or, plant an elderberry as a backdrop in a sunny pollinator bed, with your shorter perennials and shrubs in front. Slowly, this plant spreads by underground rhizomes, creating a colony that is constantly calling for collaboration with the surrounding ecology. ☀️ Happy Summer Solstice - the high point of the growing season, the longest day of the year!

🌱What does this mean for our gardens? It’s the peak of sunlight & plant energy: photosynthesis is at maximum, heat-loving crops like tomatoes & peppers thrive, and many plants shift focus toward flowering & fruiting. After this high point, days gradually shorten, so it’s an ideal time to water deeply, harvest ripe produce, prune, mulch, and plant second crops of things like beans, cucumbers, squash & more for late summer & fall abundance.

🌸Hardy ice plant (Delosperma) is a tough, low-growing succulent perennial from South Africa that forms a sparkling mat of fleshy green foliage & non-stop vibrant daisy-like flowers that draw in pollinators all season long.

Its leaves and stems are covered in specialized bladder-like cells (modified hairs) that refract light, making the plant glisten & sparkle like it’s covered in ice crystals or frost - even in the blazing heat of summer. These cells also help with water & salt regulation in the arid conditions of its natural range.

🌱Delosperma is perfect as a fast-spreading ground cover for sunny, well-draining spots, rock gardens, slopes, or between pavers. It thrives in poor, dry soils where most other plants struggle.

🌸Gazania Daisy (Gazania rigens) is one of the few flowers that seems to follow the sun, opening its brilliantly colored blooms in bright light & often closing at night or on cloudy days.

🌱Native to the sun drenched grasslands of South Africa, its dazzling flowers display striking combinations of gold, orange, yellow, pink, bronze, & crimson, frequently adorned with dramatic dark centers that act as nectar guides for pollinators.
