Bonsai Northwest

Bonsai Northwest Bonsai Northwest is Seattle’s premier bonsai nursery and community hub for over 40 years. Bonsai Northwest was founded by the incredibly talented Sharon Muth.

Discover trees, tools, pottery, wire, rare bonsai material, expert advice, classes, demos, workshops, and a welcoming place for bonsai lovers. Bonsai Northwest has been supporting the art and hobby of bonsai in the Pacific Northwest since 1985. She founded the business to sell her handcrafted bonsai pots to local club members. As the business expanded, it incorporated finished bonsai trees, beginn

er bonsai lessons, and fine Japanese pottery. When Sharon’s son, John Muth, took the reins of the family business, he pioneered importing bonsai trees and expanded the availability of bonsai pottery throughout the U.S. Bonsai Northwest is still dedicated to serving the bonsai community.

If you have never had the pleasure of smelling a Gardenia flower, you are definitely missing out! You can swing by the nursery and experience it for yourself, as ours are flowering at this very moment.

Also, if you have been interested in bonsai but don’t necessarily have suitable outdoor space, we are now carrying some Ficus bonsai that do extremely well indoors in a windowsill or close to one.

The Satsuki Azalea Festival and sale continues until Sunday. Buy 4 or more and get 20% off.

One of the more classic styles of bonsai is the forest planting. It’s certainly capable of bringing the viewer closer to nature. In these examples, the popular and rare (at least in North America) Ezo spruce was used. With its relatively smaller needle size and greenish-blue, sometimes silvery-blue foliage, it’s been a favorite in bonsai circles around the world.

We have some nice Ezo in gallon containers, if you would like to try your hand at one or even pick up a few to make your own forest.

🌲 Fresh pre-bonsai material just arrived 🌲

We recently received a large shipment of trees from renowned grower Iseli, including mugo pines, Japanese white pines, dwarf Japanese maples, elms, Blue Atlas cedars, and more. These additions broaden the already excellent range of plants available on the nursery benches.

To prep these trees for the sales floor we spend time working through each one individually—clearing structural flaws, exposing nebari hidden beneath the soil line, and opening dense canopies to bring light and air into the interior branching. That initial work helps reveal the tree’s potential and gives customers a much stronger starting point for future development.

Swipe through to the end of the carousel to see before-and-after photos of a Sharp’s Pygmy Japanese maple after its first round of cleanup and structural work.
Whether you’re looking for material to develop long-term, a species you haven’t worked with before, or simply the spark for your next project, there are some fantastic options here right now.

Stop by the nursery this weekend and see what speaks to you. 🌱
