Matelassé (mat-uh-la-SAY).

From the French for "padded" or "cushioned" — and that's just what it is. Woven as a double cloth on a jacquard or dobby loom, matelassé carries a raised, quilted surface built into the weave itself, not stitched on after. The result is texture and a gentle weight a bed gains without an extra layer.

A signature of the Anichini bed — and the start of our Textile Glossary series. More to come.

The first cool night always arrives before you're ready for it.

Then comes the pleasure of pulling the duvet back up — the give of it, the warmth a down fill holds without ever feeling heavy, the way the bed becomes somewhere you want to linger.

Every season has its comforts. This is the one you sink into.

Late summer keeps its own hours.

This is the season of the long table — unhurried evenings that began as dinner, the last of the warm light, a meal measured in conversation instead of courses. Linen worn soft with every wash, set for the people you love, on a night with nowhere it needs to be.

Soon the layers come out. For now, one more night at the table.

In the hills of Napa, a room built to exhale.

At Stanly Ranch, an Auberge Resorts Collection retreat, the doors open onto the vineyard and every layer is dressed to match that ease. We created the textiles for these rooms — the sheeting, the throws, the pillows — and, with the property itself, developed Sergio: a linen blanket made to drape and settle rather than perform, substantial and breathable, the piece the whole bed seems to soften around.

Restorative, elevated, never overdone. The kind of room you're in no hurry to leave.

Some things can't be manufactured. They can only be found.

Ours begins wherever the craft still lives — a hillside in the Himalayas, a mill in northern Italy, a loom in India, a workshop in Vermont. We go to the source because the source is the story: the climate that makes a fiber worth having, the hands that have worked it for generations, the time no factory will spend.

What comes back can't be rushed or copied. It can only be lived with — and, we hope, passed down.

Before there was a company, there was a bed in Austria.

"I remember visiting Austria in 1968. I was very young and the small bed and breakfast was simple and immaculate. The beds were billowing with down-filled white linen bedding — pure, light, and beautiful.

That night introduced me to a new way of sleeping: down and natural linen. You could say it planted the experiential seed that would later become ANICHINI.

To this day, the finest down bedding I have encountered comes from Austria and Germany, where beautiful down duvets and natural linens remain the standard for truly exceptional sleep."

— Susan Dollenmaier, Founder

More than fifty years on, our down is still filled fresh to order, never pulled from a shelf.

Linen is honest.

It wrinkles. It softens. It carries the day with it. Ours is woven in Italy from pure flax — the kind that takes a mineral-rich climate and generations of know-how to grow and spin. Nothing about it can be rushed.

And it lives more than one life: the open, rustic basketweave of a table you actually use, and the fine jacquard that falls with the ease of silk — the same thread, breathing through warm nights.

Made the long way, on purpose.

ANICHINI HOSPITALITY | Sani/Ikos

Set along some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful coastlines, Sani Resort and Ikos Resorts pair remarkable natural settings with sophisticated, thoughtfully considered interiors — from Greece's Kassandra peninsula to Corfu, Kos, and Crete, Mallorca and the Costa del Sol.

We're honored that ANICHINI now dresses the beds across these exceptional resorts. For the guest rooms, the choice was Lucrezia — our finest Italian sateen, woven from 100% long-staple cotton at a small boutique mill near Lake Como and finished with a hemstitched, double-pleated French fl**ge.

Some of the most important elements of a room aren't visual — the hand of the sheeting, the quality of the finish, the way a bed feels. A detail a guest may never name, but experiences every time they slip into bed.

The anatomy of a summer bed.

Three layers, each doing one job well when the nights turn warm.

Percale sets the base — extra-long-staple cotton, cool and smooth against the skin.

Linen follows, loosely woven and textural, moving air while you sleep.

And a matelassé coverlet stays folded at the foot, there for the hour the room finally cools.

The summer bed, composed.
