Matelassé (mat-uh-la-SAY).
From the French for "padded" or "cushioned" — and that's just what it is. Woven as a double cloth on a jacquard or dobby loom, matelassé carries a raised, quilted surface built into the weave itself, not stitched on after. The result is texture and a gentle weight a bed gains without an extra layer.
A signature of the Anichini bed — and the start of our Textile Glossary series. More to come.
