In 1893, the U.S. Supreme Court officially ruled that tomatoes are VEGETABLES—even though botanically, they're fruits!

Here's what happened:

Back in 1883, Congress passed the Tariff Act, which placed a 10% tax on imported vegetables but let fruits enter tax-free. Produce importer John Nix took his case to the Supreme Court, arguing tomatoes shouldn't be taxed since they have seeds and grow from flowers (the definition of a fruit!).

The Court unanimously agreed that botanically, tomatoes ARE fruits—but ruled that in the "common language" of everyday life and cooking, they're vegetables. The ruling was all about how people actually use them: in salads, on sandwiches, in soups.

So whether you call them a fruit or a vegetable, you're technically right either way—just depends on whether you're talking to a botanist or a lawyer! 😄

Dear friends, we wanted to let you know that The Guinea Greenery will be closing for the remainder of the year while I focus on some health matters. Unfortunately, this means we won't be at events this fall and won't have our usual autumn plants available. We know many of you look forward to them, and we're sorry to miss you this season. Normally I would shoot it, but it is so desperate for water in this drought that it risks being seen just to get a drink. I must respect this little creature struggling to survive. Let it live today, but know that next time, its luck will run out.

"In the greenhouse, a flicker,
