A custom kitchen starts with the design phase. Drawings, revisions, a long run of selections meetings, and a start date that keeps moving until all of it is settled.

For plenty of houses that work is necessary. The layout has to change, so the design genuinely has to come first.

For plenty of other houses it doesn't. The layout already works. What's tired is the cabinets, the counters, the tile and the fixtures - and none of that requires six months of drawings to sort out.

That's what BoCo Select is for. Most of the design thinking is handled before you call, so the front half of the project largely goes away and you get to the part you actually wanted, which is the build. Weeks, not months. Dark floor in a small white bathroom. Most people talk themselves out of it.

The instinct is to keep everything light so the room feels bigger. What usually happens instead is the room reads flat - nothing carries any weight, and every pale surface competes with every other pale surface.

A charcoal hex does the opposite. It gives the floor a job, and the white cabinetry and the veined counter get to be the bright thing in the room instead of one more light surface among several.

Then one metal, everywhere. Black faucets, black mirror frames, black pulls, black towel hook. Three vertical sconces instead of two, so both mirrors get light from either side rather than from overhead - side light is the reason you can actually see your own face.

Worth noting: nothing moved in this bathroom. Vanity in the same place, shower in the same place, the original doors stayed. All of the change is surface, fixture and light.

A kitchen can use several different finishes without feeling busy. The balance comes from deciding which surfaces should lead and which ones should stay quiet.

In this room, the light wood cabinetry adds warmth, the white upper cabinets keep the perimeter open, and the dark island gives the center of the room visual weight. The textured backsplash ties those elements together without asking to be the only thing you notice.

BoCo Modern is a residential design-build firm based in Raleigh, North Carolina. We've been doing kitchens, bathrooms, additions, and whole-house remodels across the Triangle — Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Wake Forest, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, and Holly Springs — since 2010.

Every remodel is a balance of quality, time, and what matters to the client. Our job is to know where that balance lives on every decision — and to make the call so you don't have to.
