It’s always fun seeing dudleyas growing from the base of cacti, using them as a “nurse” plant—a fairly common occurrence in the coastal and fog desert areas of Baja California. However, only on my last trip did I gain deeper insight into this phenomenon: sometimes the dudleyas use the interface of cactus spines and lichen on the body of a cactus as a substrate to germinate and grow directly on the base of the cactus itself. Can you spot all three of the smaller dudleya seedlings? Here we have Dudleya cultrata growing on Mammillaria dioica.
