One of the cool thing's about worm farming with mushroom substrate is every once in awhile you get these real cool mushrooms growing out of the castings 😁

Living Soil Worm Bucket, a multi purpose product containing 3 gallons of rich pre-composted spent mushroom substrate, 1/2 gallon of active and freshly harvested Fine Worm Castings, and 1/4 lbs of battle tested Red Composting Worms!

A couple tips/thoughts for use:

For Composting: The rule of thumb for composting is 1lb or roughly 1000 worms per square foot of surface area. If you are just establishing a new bin, starting with less is just fine and helps with learning. Go easy on adding food scraps until your population grows as 1/4 lb won’t break down the organic material as quickly as having a full 1 lb per square foot. Rest assured, these little guys are prolific breeders and will quickly grow in quantity.

For Gardening: Healthy soil has between 100-300 worms per square yard or 9 square feet (Ohio State University, Dr. Clive Edwards). For every square foot you should have between 11 – 33 worms. Again, you can always start out with less. Red Composting Worms are great population regulators and will quickly grow into their space.

SGT Worm's Farm worms are sold in the material I breed and feed them in. This is very much living material and is the real strength of the LivingSoil Bucket, reducing the time needed to acclimate to a new home which lessons population loss due to stress.

In each Living Soil Bucket you get the adult worms, juvenile worms, cocoons, castings, and all the microorganisms needed to break down organic material into nutrients for your plants. This means your worms won’t be stressed and will transition much easier to their new environment.

Let's talk worm weight. You will see the little guys sold by both quantity and weight on different platforms. The most common is weight but with that is a estimate of quantity. General rule is 1000 red wigglers per pound. (500 for 1/2 pound, 250 per 1/4 pound). But even this can be misleading. For instance, if I was to sell you as fully mature worms as I could, there would be 400-500 per pound, especially if I had them isolated and fed them worm chow. On the flip side of this, if I sold you a batch of 1-3 month old worms... now I've never counted mind you because that would be a terrible task, but I would estimate there to be closer to 5,000 worms in a pound of 1-3 month old worms, probably more.

Bottom line is, all worms eat and p**p. Some studies have shown that juvenile worms eat even more than mature worms (just like a human teenager).

**Look closely at the photo and you will see a variety of sizes.

Was lucky to receive a video of one of the beneficials microbes in SGT Worm's Farm Castings. It's in the little details! SGT Worm's Farm is dedicated to improving it's own Living Soil so we can improve your's 💪.

Big thank you to Annie Daellenbach of Microscopy and Me!

Bacterial-feeding nematodes consume soil bacteria, regulating their populations and releasing nitrogen in plant-available forms. They play a crucial role in nutrient cycling, especially in compost systems where bacterial decomposition is active.

1. Appearance: Simple mouth with a wide opening, no stylet.

2. Movement: Rapid, whip-like thrashing, propelling them through bacterial biofilms.

When bacterial feeders are abundant, it indicates active bacterial decomposition and a nutrient-rich soil environment.

Did a little experiment tonight. I sifted out the cocoon's from 7 breeder bins and consolidated the hatch into a mortar tub. The material seperated was 1" deep, 16" wide, and 21" long for a total of 336 cubic inches of material. I then took a sample containing 1 cubic inch of hatch material and counted the worm cocoon's contained in that square inch. I counted 55 cocoon's. Now if I can assume that every other square inch also had 55 cocoon's then the mortar tub cocoon total would be estimated at 18,480 cocoon's. If I also use the low side (2) from the fact that every cocoon holds between 2-5 worms I can extrapolate that in 21 days, my breeder worms provided our farm with enough cocoon's to hatch about 36,960 baby worms.

I think I may have broke my brain.... pretty cool though!
