‼️‼️CONTRACTOR EDUCATION: “LICENSED & INSURED” ACTUALLY MEANS SOMETHING.‼️‼️
We’ve seen a lot of confusion in the construction industry about what it actually means to be a licensed & insured contractor in Louisiana.
So, let’s educate, not criticize. Because many contractors and homeowners simply don’t realize the difference.
❌ HAVING AN LLC DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE A LICENSED CONTRACTOR.
An LLC is a business structure. It is not a contractor’s license issued by the State of Louisiana.
Depending on the work being performed and the applicable requirements, an unlicensed business may be able to perform certain work within the state’s legal limits of $,7500 but that does not make the business a licensed contractor.
And you cannot simply advertise yourself as “Licensed & Insured” if you do not actually hold the appropriate state contractor license. Misrepresenting your licensing status can result in serious penalties.
‼️HOME IMPROVEMENT REGISTRATION
A Home Improvement Registration is another step beyond simply having an LLC, but it is not the same thing as holding a Louisiana residential contractor’s license.
There are limitations on the type and dollar amount of work that can be performed under this registration. You CANNOT exceed $50,000 when holding this registration.
Certain scopes of work, particularly work that falls under Louisiana’s contractor licensing requirements, require the appropriate contractor license. Even with this license you CANNOT perform, any type of roofing, metal or shingle, & structural framing, this includes wood frame & metal frame.
🏡 RESIDENTIAL CONTRACTOR’S LICENSE
This is where B&B Construction comes in.
B&B Construction holds a Louisiana Residential Contractor’s License, allowing us to legally perform residential construction within the scope of our license, including larger residential projects and scopes such as new construction and roofing. Holding this license means, we have no limits for residential construction.
In other words, there is a BIG difference between:
* Having an LLC
* Having a Home Improvement Registration
* Holding the appropriate Residential Contractor’s License
⁉️AND “INSURED” MATTERS TOO.
In Louisiana, licensing and insurance requirements go hand-in-hand.
Contractors must meet the state’s requirements for things such as general liability and workers’ compensation coverage, where applicable, in order to legally operate and maintain the appropriate licensing.
Workers’ compensation is especially important. Louisiana law generally requires workers’ compensation coverage for employers with one or more employees, subject to applicable exceptions.
This isn’t just paperwork.
It protects homeowners, employees, contractors, and businesses.
⚠️ “FLYING UNDER THE RADAR” CAN GET EXPENSIVE.
Operating outside of Louisiana’s licensing requirements can result in complaints, investigations, administrative action, fines, and potentially serious legal consequences, especially when someone falsely represents themselves as licensed. This is a FELONY charge.
And if something goes wrong on a job, the consequences can become much bigger than the original project.
That’s why homeowners should always ask:
* Are you properly licensed for this work
* What type of license do you hold?
* Are you properly insured?
* Do you carry workers’ compensation when required?
* Can I verify your license with the Louisiana State Licensing Board?
At B&B Construction, we take this seriously.
We have worked hard to structure our company the right way and the legal way.
Licensing, insurance, employees, equipment, permits, compliance, and everything else that comes with operating a legitimate construction company costs money, but those requirements exist for a reason.
We’re sharing this because we genuinely believe education protects everyone.
Contractors: Do your homework. Know what you’re legally allowed to do.
Homeowners: Do your homework. Know who you’re hiring.
Don’t choose a contractor simply because they’re the cheapest.
Choose someone who is properly licensed, properly insured, and willing to stand behind their work.
It’s more than a title.
It’s responsibility.
It’s protection.
And it’s the law. 🇺🇸
