So, you ask, "Where does all the dust come from???'
Studies show that 60% of household dust comes from your neighbors house........ just kidding. Sixty per-cent does come from outside. There are contaminates in and on everything that crosses your threshold or windowsill. Here is some of what is in dust: plant pollen, human and animal hair, human and animal skin, textile fibers, paper fibers, minerals from outdoor soil, burnt meteorite particles... Seems to me a lot comes from the fabrics in our homes. Carpets, bedding, towels and the rest of the laundry.
The dust does not come from the heater ducts - but it does get sucked into the returns and a fair amount goes through the sources as well. Some of it will get the caught by the filter. Places where the ducts aren't correctly sized for the air flow will let the dirt and fall out of the air stream and collect. It will also collect at joints in the duct as well as screws that hold the duct together. If you ever moved a piece of furniture and found an accumulation of dust, dirt, pet and Lego's - that's what collects in the duct work. Not cleaning that accumulation up and putting the furniture back - would be like leaving the duct work continue to collect more contaminates. And that becomes the favorable environment for dust mites and microbes. To eliminate this build up of debris in your heating and air conditioning duct work is easy.
