Every year, I add a handful of new plants to try in my personal garden to see how well they hold up here in North Texas.

This year was the year of tropical plants. I absolutely love dragon fruit, but as one of the pricier fruits I thought it was high time to try to grow my own. The variety pictured here is called Costa Rican Sunset and it's known for having bright red flesh! I'm hoping for a harvest late this year, but i have fallen so in love with these plants that I'll settle for next year if it doesn't happen 😅

I promise, your artichokes are not dead!

Artichokes are one of my favorite crops to grow here in North Texas since they go dormant in droughts AND winter! The less I have to water, the better. When summer heat and drought hits, the plants die back to store energy for the fall.

Heavy rains and shorter days in spring send the message to the plant to produce artichokes, but as soon as the ground begins to dry, the flowers open to prepare the plant for the summer ahead.

When leaves start getting crispy, I cut mine back around 80% to help speed up the dormancy process and leave the healthiest leaves for the plant to store their energy. When temperatures cool down again, I make sure the plant is watered much more often because shorter days and water in the fall can help trick the plant into producing another crop before winter!

Since artichokes are a perennial that can live 6-10 years, I always recommend them as a North Texas crop for people who desire low-maintenance vegetable gardening. No better way than a plant that can produce twice a year and goes dormant twice a year!

First nursery project done 💪 The compost area was in need of a dire upgrade and since there are a couple more weeks until fall seeding begins, no better time... Except for the heat!
