🏞️ Designed Around the View

This riverfront home was shaped around one idea: every part of the house should connect back to the landscape. The U-shaped layout frames the river from multiple angles, giving each wing its own unique perspective and relationship to the outdoors.

The north wing is dedicated to the kids’ bedrooms and activity spaces, while the center of the home brings everyone together through the living, dining, and entry areas. On the south wing, the kitchen and master suite create a more private retreat with direct access to the outdoor living spaces and some of the best river views on the property.

Different rooflines and transitions help define each zone while strengthening the indoor-outdoor connection throughout the home. The result is a house that feels open, intentional, and deeply connected to its setting.

🪟 It’s Not the Size of the Room, It’s the Windows

When a space feels right, window design is usually doing more work than you think.

Larger windows don’t just frame views. They pull the outdoors in and expand how a room feels, even in smaller spaces. The result is a space that feels open, connected, and more livable without adding square footage.

Placement matters just as much. A well positioned window in a hallway can bring in light, create depth, and turn a pass through space into something that feels intentional.

Every window is designed with a purpose. When scale and placement are done right, the entire space changes.

🚪 If the First Thing You See Is a Toilet… We Need to Talk

Sightlines shape your entire first impression of a home. What you see when you walk in matters more than most people realize.

In this home, we designed a clear line of sight from the front door straight through to the backyard, creating a sense of openness and connection. Along the way, key elements are intentionally hidden. The kitchen island blocks the sink and dishwasher so they don’t become the focal point. Bedrooms and bathrooms are tucked behind hallways and alcoves instead of being on display.

As you move through the home, each space reveals itself at the right moment. Even in the bedrooms, the view is directed outward, pulling your eye toward natural light and the outdoors.

Great design isn’t accidental. It’s about controlling perspective and deciding what gets seen and what stays hidden.

🥊 On April 4th, I’ll be stepping into the ring with Chris Resner for the Raising Shasta 6th Annual Fundraiser, The Roaring Rumble, a 1920s celebrity boxing event supporting youth programs here in Shasta County.

The training and game plan is locked in, but the real goal is raising money for Raising Shasta and the work they do for kids and families in our community. Each pair is fundraising, and the team that raises the most takes home the championship belt, so every donation really does count.

🏡 Balancing Work, Rest, and Play

This house is designed to do it all - work, rest, and play. We divided the space into three distinct zones, each carefully crafted to support the family’s lifestyle.

The exterior blends stone, stucco, and metal to create a balanced, Napa farmhouse vibe that feels both modern and rooted in the rural landscape. It’s like walking into a vineyard resort - designed for a family that works hard but also enjoys life to the fullest.

With varying rooflines and defined zones, each area has its own purpose. On one side, you have a private, restful master bedroom; on the other, an entertainment zone designed for gathering. And don’t forget the fourth zone: a custom shop designed just for the family’s needs.

📐 When a Space Doesn’t Feel Right, Proportion Is Often the Culprit

That subtle discomfort you notice when you enter a room is rarely random. A lot of the time, the “math” of the space is off, and proportion is the reason.

Proportion means the relationship between a room’s ceiling height, width, and length, plus how well that shape supports real life furniture and movement.

In a large living room, the right proportions can make the space feel light, open, and easy to furnish. In a bedroom, slightly tighter proportions often create a calmer, cozier atmosphere.

Acoustics matter too. Spaces with parallel floors, ceilings, and walls can amplify echo. A vaulted ceiling can help by breaking up those parallel surfaces and softening the sound.

Good design plans for proportion and flow from the start, so the room feels comfortable, functional, and visually balanced.

The vision behind La Joie Bakery at Kate's has come to life. 🥐 This light-filled, intentional space was crafted to showcase the artistry behind every pastry without overwhelming it.

From the moment the doors opened, the flow of the layout has guided guests through the space without distraction. Natural daylight fills the room in the morning, shifting to a warm interior glow by afternoon. Every design choice was made to highlight the product, support the experience, and create a quiet sense of welcome.

When the food is this good, the space around it should elevate it without stealing the show. La Joie was designed to feel simple, timeless, and beautifully understated - and now, it’s yours to enjoy.

🏡 Three Things to Know Before You Buy Land

We see it all the time - buyers falling in love with a property before they understand the full picture. Here are three often-overlooked factors that can seriously impact your build:

How far you build from the street affects the cost of water, sewer, electric, gas, and more. Distance equals dollars.

2. Topography & Soils
Even a slight slope or unstable soil can complicate your foundation and drive up costs. Always dig into the details.
