Continuing on from our last post.. when the moths have laid eggs all over the turf area these little worms start developing and eating the tinder center section of the turf grass. Sod Web worms, Army Worms and Cut Worms are very similar to their habits and how we control them. The lawn shown was browned in less than 7 days from first signs.. These worms will not eat clover, or other weeds only the moist tinder lawn grass. So finding them and controlling them quickly is very important.
A browning lawn is not always a water issue, first would be to go to the outer edge of the brown area and part the grass with your fingers, parting it in many areas and inspect the soil for moisture and the presents of these worms. Also short eaten blades of grass as shown. These worms also bring the presents of wasp, and moles looking for these various worms.
A granular form of insecticide found at any hardware store applied with a spreader will kill all of these worms and other bugs in minutes. Treatment for the lawn is easy as the worms do not eat the roots or bottoms of the grass witch will grow back. But how ever everything seems to attack a lawn in distress such as weeds so a careful eye out for them would be good.
1 ounce of pesticide applied at the correct time for prevention is better than a pound applied at the wrong time for treatment.
