The SGH Architects’ offices were filled with Halloween guests from near and far last week. In our Redlands office, LA Dodgers’ coaching staff were joined by Star-Lord, the night shift Manager at Naugles Tacos, Cowgirl Barbie, a James Dean-era hooligan, a collegiate baseball player, the Most Interesting Man in The World, and Jack Skellington de Argentina.

San Dimas was joined by Wyatt Earp, a man who was once on a wayward path but found architecture, a professional bull rider that suffered a devastating shoulder injury, a fierce pirate, your friendly neighborhood Target Associate, and a half-empty bottle of Sriracha Sauce.

So. Much. Halloween. FUN!

Revitalizing Charles Helmers Elementary: A Space and Innovation Success Story

Charles Helmers Elementary in Santa Clarita, California, faced significant challenges due to a rapidly growing student population and limited space. The original campus design relied on an adjacent city park for student activities, but safety and supervision concerns severely restricted its use. As enrollment surged, 18 portable classrooms were added, occupying nearly all the hardcourt play areas and leaving students with little outdoor space.

Recognizing the need for a permanent solution, Saugus Union School District partnered with SGH Architects to design a two-story classroom addition. This project not only eliminated the need for the portable classrooms but also reclaimed over 60,000 square feet of play area, providing ample space for outdoor activities. The addition also included a state-of-the-art Flex Lab and outdoor learning spaces, fostering hands-on learning and exploration.

The transformation of Charles Helmers Elementary demonstrates how thoughtful design can overcome space constraints, enhancing both the facilities and the educational experience for students. This project is a model of how innovative architectural solutions can positively impact a school community.

Saugus Union School District celebrated the ribbon cutting for their brand-new Classroom and Flex Library Addition on the Skyblue Mesa Elementary School campus last week. As part of the District’s relocatable replacement program, SGH Architects designed a new 10,000 SF Library, Flex Science Classroom, and Standard Classroom Building that houses 6 rooms.

The Library takes advantage of natural daylighting and opens into a shared collaboration area with the Science Classroom as well as access to outdoor learning spaces where students can read and experiment with science-related projects. The additional classrooms also occupy a shared “Collaboration Corridor” for learning opportunities where sliding glass doors allow for cross-collaboration and “sticky spaces” that encourage spontaneous learning.

Congratulations to Saugus Union School District, Skyblue Mesa Elementary School staff and students, and the incredible Santa Clarita community on this monumental addition!

Apple Valley Unified School District’s Granite Hills High School has been playing football home games at rival Apple Valley High School since opening its doors in 1999. The New Stadium and Athletic Complex project will finally allow the school to host its own home games and showcase Cougar spirit!

The Stadium is Phase I of a multi-phase 40-acre master plan adjacent to the existing campus that wishes to incorporate not only high school athletics and academics but create more community interaction and outreach opportunities as well.

The program for the new facility will incorporate an artificial turf football and soccer field, all-weather track, 5,000 seat capacity bleachers, concession and restroom buildings, and team locker rooms. Additionally, coaches, trainers, and officials’ offices and a state-of-the-art weight room create more space for program expansion and training facilities.
SGH Architects is proud to have been selected to help bring this much needed and anticipated project to life.
