~~~ Happy New Year 2022 ~~~
Peninsula Potagers
Your “New Year” of home grown is on its way! Seed catalogs and orders of seed packets are arriving. If you are like me, you have been planning and drawing the placement of this year’s veggie garden for months. Or maybe it’s been a dream and this is the year the dream of starting a veggie garden comes to life!
Most of the peninsula is planting zone 9b, a Mediterranean climate. Did you know we can use hoops and row tunnels to grow many things all year? Now is also the time to start your 2022 Garden Journal. Write down everything related to what you have done and what you will do in the garden; prepping, seed ordering, seed starting, adding amendments, what worked, what did not, what you want to do different, what you want to learn, and what was amazing!
Planning a kitchen garden includes several elements like selecting the perfect spot in your yard, choosing a raised bed design that blends with your home and creates an outdoor room you enjoy being in. Take time before you plant to make a list of foods you enjoy eating and cooking. Grow vegetables you know and over time experiment with growing new varieties. Start with a great soil recipe.
If you are feeling overwhelmed this year or stuck with your garden planning Peninsula Potagers can help you. As an experienced Garden Coach, I can help you plan where to locate your garden, what soil recipe to use, share various garden bed design styles to suit your needs and assist you with choosing plants and planting at the perfect times.
I provide a wide range of home gardening services including my passion of Coaching others to be successful gardeners.
What an incredible place we live called, the "Peninsula!" (9-10b) Made up of 9 different counties, from San Francisco (north) to Sunnyvale (south) and Halfmoon Bay (west) to Alameda (east) the Peninsula is known for its many microclimates. With each impressive microclimate comes special qualities of sunlight, fog, wind, rain, heat, cold, varying day to day, summer and winter, spring and fall. Those variant qualities can make gardening difficult. So, why do we have so many different climates? It all comes down to our location near water. It is found to the north, west and east. Plus, we have mountains and valleys that push away or trap the heat and/or swirl wind and fog.
These qualities all add to the beauty of nature and enhance our enjoyment of the outdoors. It also gives us a growing season of 303 days! So, let's get busy gardening!
Hard to believe only a month and a half more till spring.
FEBRUARY------Have you been dreaming about planting yet?
With our frost days almost behind us we can begin many gardening related tasks.
* Plan your garden. It's good to even draw it out.
* Purchase seeds if you haven't already.
* Clean up old plants, leaves or any debris from your containers or beds.
* Amend your soil.
*Indoors start seeds such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, leeks, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, and lettuce.
* Plant directly potatoes, rhubarb, onions, garlic, and asparagus.
* Direct sow seeds of beets, carrots, scallions, spinach.
* Or call the nursery to see what seedlings are available now.
* Prune lavender back along with roses, ornamental grasses and trees.
* Divide perennials like daylilies, iris', and yarrow.
Everyone can grow a garden. Sometimes we just need a little coaching. As a Garden Coach and Founder of Peninsula Potagers I can help you on your garden journey.
