The Luxury Secret Hidden Behind the Drywall: A lot of Blocking

When you walk through a finished KRÄM custom home, you see flawless finishes, floating shelves, and custom built-ins. But what you don’t see is the secret ingredient that makes it all possible: Blocking.

If you are currently framing a home or planning a build, you want to make sure your builder loves blocking just as much as we do. Here is a breakdown of what it is and why we use it plentifully:

What is Construction Blocking?
Simply put, blocking is the installation of solid wood blocks horizontally between the vertical wall studs before the drywall goes up.
While studs provide the main structure for the wall, they are spaced apart.
If you want to hang something heavy exactly between those studs, you're usually out of luck-unless you have blocking… or if you want to just hang it there and hope? 😂😅
Blocking creates a continuous, solid wood anchor hidden entirely behind your drywall. Of course, it helps us later when it’s time to mount TVs, cabinets, mirrors, and more!
It’s "easy" for contractors to cut corners on things hidden behind drywall, but at KRÄM, we believe the bones of the home should be just as precise as the final coat of paint. Taking the extra time to install abundant blocking during the framing phase is just one of the ways we ensure your home functions beautifully for a lifetime.
Building a custom home soon? Make sure to ask your builder to add that blocking for your frame, mirror, tv, or mount!. Or better yet, let our team handle the details for you.

Building Legacies, On and Off the Job Site.

At KRÄM, we spend our days crafting legacy homes meant to be passed down through generations. But today, we are pausing the blueprints to celebrate the greatest titles our team members hold: Dad.

Happy Father’s Day to the incredible fathers who help anchor the KRÄM family!

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on the men who bring the same dedication, patience, and care to their families as they do to our custom builds.

To Robb, Nathaniel, Mark, Tim, and all the amazing fathers, grandfathers, and father figures in our incredible community-thank you for the sacrifices you make, the wisdom you share, and the love you build into the lives of your children every day.

Enjoy your day, gentlemen. You’ve more than earned it!
Join us in wishing the KRÄM dads a Happy Father’s Day! Drop a comment below to show them some love. 👇

How does a sense of humor change your build experience?

It Lowers the Stakes (Without Lowering the Standards)
When you are investing heavily in your dream home, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressure of getting every detail perfect. A builder who can share a laugh with you takes the anxiety out of the room. We keep the atmosphere light so that making decisions—from your baseboard profiles to your tile layouts—feels fun, not stressful.

It Beats "Analysis Paralysis"
Ever stared at five different shades of "off-white" paint until your eyes blurred? We’ve been there. Sometimes, the best way to break a design tie is a quick joke, a reality check, and a reminder that whatever you choose is going to look spectacular.

It Navigates the Unexpected with Grace
In construction, the unexpected happens. A rainstorm delays a concrete pour. A rigid, stressed-out team panics. A team with a sense of humor says, “Well, I guess this section is going to be the indoor pool." and immediately pivots to a solution with a smile. It keeps the energy positive and the momentum moving forward.
True Luxury is a Relationship, Not Just a Transaction

At KRÄM, we take our craftsmanship incredibly seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. You are going to be partnering with your builder for a year or more. We believe that when you look back on this journey, you shouldn't just remember the blueprints and the dust. You should remember the laughs, the shared excitement, and the genuine friendships built along the way.

After all, your dream home should be built with joy. Ready to partner with a team that brings elite expertise and a great vibe to the job site? Let’s talk about your vision. Slide into our DMs to get started!

What questions should I ask before choosing my interior doors?

Here are a few you might run into:

1. "Should I choose solid core or hollow core?"
For us, solid core is the standard. Hollow core doors feel light, sound shaky when closed, and offer little privacy. Solid core doors have a premium, heavy weight to them, closing with a satisfying "thud."
2. "How much sound-deadening do I need?"
Consider the layout of your home. You’ll absolutely want heavy, solid-core doors on bedrooms, home offices, media rooms, and laundry spaces to block out noise and maximize acoustic privacy.
3. "What size and height will match my ceilings?"
If you are building with our recommended 9 to 10-foot ceilings, standard 6'8" doors can look disproportionately small. Maybe we upgrade to 8-foot interior doors? This is also a preference, and can be subject to what you like!
4. "How easy will these be to clean and maintain?"
Intricate, deeply recessed panels look stunning but can catch dust. High-gloss finishes show fingerprints. If you have a busy household, ask about durable, easy-to-wipe finishes and profiles.
5. "Which style best complements my architectural vision?"
Your doors should echo the language of your home. A sleek, flush door with hidden hinges looks incredible in a minimalist modern build, whereas a 3-panel shaker or a traditional raised-panel door beautifully grounds a classic or transitional estate.

We Guide You Through Every Detail
You don't have to navigate these choices alone. Our design team walks you through every single selection, from the door weight and height down to the finish of the hinges and handles, to ensure your home looks, feels, and sounds exactly the way you envisioned.

You’re relaxing in your new home, look up, and notice it: a small, hairline crack in the drywall near a doorframe or ceiling joint. Your heart sinks a little.

Naturally, the first question that pops into your head is: "Why is this happening? Where will the next problem be? Does this mean I hired a bad contractor? "
Let’s clear the air right away. The short answer is: Absolutely not. Small drywall cracks are normal and expected as part of a new home’s lifecycle.

1. Wood is a Living Material
Even premium lumber used in framing contains a small amount of natural moisture. As your home goes through its first full cycle of seasons, that wood naturally dries out and undergoes microscopic shrinkage. When the wood moves just a fraction of a millimeter, the rigid drywall attached to it can develop a hairline crack.

2. Seasonal Expansion & Contraction
Homes breathe. During humid summers and dry winter materials expand and contract. This subtle shifting puts minor stress on drywall joints and seams-especially around high-stress areas like windows, doors, and vaults.

3. Minor Initial Settling
No matter how perfectly engineered your foundation is, a new house weighs a LOT. As it settles into the earth during the first year or two, the structure adjusts. Hairline cracks are simply the house finding its permanent groove.

The Mark of a Great Builder Isn't Perfection-It’s the Warranty
The difference between an average builder and a luxury custom builder isn't that our homes are immune to the laws of physics-it’s how we take care of you afterward. At KRÄM, we know this settling happens. We don't just hand over the keys and disappear; we will come back to patch, texture, and touch up those natural settling cracks once the home has had time to breathe.

Now if a chunk of drywall falls on your head? You might want to get out of there. 🤣

What should my ceiling height be?

When it comes to framing your custom estate, every dimension matters-especially looking up. Here is a question our design team gets quite often:
What should my ceiling height be?

The honest answer? It is completely subjective! Your ceiling height should reflect how you want a room to feel. Cozy and intimate? Dramatic and grand? The choice is entirely up to your personal style and lifestyle needs.

However, when crafting a modern luxury home, our team generally encourages a 9 to 10-foot minimum. Here is why we love aiming higher:

The Illusion of Space: Higher ceilings draw the eye upward, instantly making a room feel more expansive, airy, and grand-even in rooms with smaller footprints.

Architectural Freedom: A 10-foot ceiling gives you the canvas for stunning architectural details, from intricate crown molding and elegant ceilings to large timber beams.

Maximizing Natural Light: Taller walls allow for larger windows. This floods your living spaces with natural light and perfectly frames your property’s views.

At KRÄM, we don’t believe in cookie-cutter standards. During our architectural design phase, we can use 3D renderings to show you how different ceiling heights will impact your spaces, helping you make the final call with total confidence.

When the team and the client see the vision, your empty lot of trees and stumps becomes the entryway to your new home.
