Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens

Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens as well as Central and South America under the name ‘Mobile Gardens’ for 12 years. So was born the passion for our lifelong indulgence.

For 46 years, Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens in Rhinebeck NY has been a grower of an extraordinary variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs and ornamentals. From Manhattan to Rhinebeck, NY in 1979 we laid claim to 11 acres of land and built our first greenhouse, growing rare and tropical collectable plants that were sold mail order all over the U.S. Then a fuel crisis took its toll a

nd the need for a cash crop gave birth to our second greenhouse, coached and mentored by Clifford Tine, a third generation greenhouse plantsman of the now defunct New Jersey Botanical Gardens in Somerville. Next, getting a name change that wouldn’t confuse us with a trailer park or campground and presto Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens appeared. For the next 27 years our two families developed our two botanical businesses into what we think is a very unique little niche in the horticultural community. The coolest thing about NDBG – is that it breathes – a working, living greenhouse operation where the plants we sell are the plants we grow right here. Whether from seed, cutting, plugs, roots or divisions they're grown here. So you could just walk around and see what we do to make the stock look the way it does – healthy, green and happy. Just watch out for the hoses, they’re everywhere. The sales yard is maintained outdoors comfortably situated between greenhouses nestled nicely in the back woods of Rhinebeck, off the beaten track in as relaxed a setting as a nursery can have. We’re set up in the most visitor friendly way we can think of. Each group of plants is set on their own benches or in the case of larger groups like perennials their own areas in alphabetical order and exceptional signage with pictures, culture and descriptions. The results make an easy, satisfying and informative plant buying experience for any level gardener. We’re happy to lure you Plant Nuts and Garden Meisters with some obscure annual or little known perennial, but we're most proud of the people who have become avid gardeners and credit us with their new found prowess. We know the hardest part of what we do is getting you here, but once you're here, you're spoiled and you’re ours! My favorite stories are those from people coming here for the first time.. Our roots run deep as now 2 of our 4 children have joined us. And with a range of 8 greenhouses and 3 holding houses on 70 acres the future looks bright. To our loyal customers we thank you for your patronage and support, to first timers whose curiosity we’'ve managed to tweak, know that you'll always be welcome to our horticultural family.

After a bit of intense recovery these perennial pitcher plants have proven to be more hardy than you would expect. They were accidentally baked in one of those early heat waves and it took us a while to get them planted. Sure enough once they were settled they have all sent up new pitchers and showing excellent promise!
While you'll find the most diverse selection of native carnivorous plants in the more southern United States these are native up through Canada. They thrive in full sun boggy areas and flower late in Winter or early Spring. This is one of our many native plants grown right on the property. It's a great time of year to get perennials in- come on by to see what's filled in since the early weeks ✨

This is a great time to give your plants a pre summer haircut. With all this heat, sunshine and therefor watering that's been needed -especially for container grown plants- you've surely seen some serious growth. A *what feels to be harsh* haircut for anything extra loooong or plants that have gotten thin instead of keeping their vigor will improve their growth. All this extra water has also washed away a lot of nutrients for container grown plants out of the soil so don't forget to feed everybody as well. In 2 weeks you'll be blown away by the results...here's some proof from how we manage our crops at the nursery.

This area of Dutchess County has a very rich history of farming and agriculture. We are beyond proud to keep that legacy alive and well alongside the community of farmers who have endured the test of time or have moved in to create something special of their own. We joyfully give kudos to those who raise their crops with integrity and grit to help make this world a healthy happy place. 🙌

Thank you as always to our supporters who keep us going.

Here's a list of plants Ives used in my bug repelling containers so you don't have to sit through my extra long sweet vid for the deets:

Lemon grass, mountain mint, monarda citrodora, thyme, pineapple sage, summer savory, citronella geranium, marigold, rue, tulsi basil...

Also consider oregano, catnip...mint..ooh! Lemon balm! 🤤

Herbs require a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight to thrive. Watering containers is based on the weather not a set schedule so answering the question. Of "how often do I water?" Is solely dependent on the dryness of the soil. You can scratch around or lift your containers to determine whether or not they need a drink.

Happy planting!

BEANS ON THE MOVE!

Beans are relocating from indoors to out! 3 varieties, each in 4-packs.

Cucumbers, melons, pumpkin, zucchini, squash all stay indoors so we can control their growth and try to keep them tame.

Looks like this weekend is gonna be some pretty primo planting weather with rain forecasted for the evenings 🥳
