Yellow leaves don't mean "add fertilizer." They mean three different things depending on where the yellowing starts.

That's true for almost every leaf symptom. The plant is telling you what's wrong — but the diagnosis depends on which leaves, which part of the leaf, and whether it's new or old growth.

🌱 The quick read:

- Lower leaves yellowing first — nitrogen. The plant pulls it from old leaves to feed new ones
- Upper leaves yellow with green veins — iron. New growth can't get enough
- All leaves yellowing evenly — overwatering. The roots are suffocating
- Leaves turning purple — phosphorus
- Brown crispy edges — potassium
- Leaves curling inward — water stress
- Spots — fungal
- Holes — insect

The difference between nitrogen and iron is which end of the plant turns yellow first. Most of the time, the leaf already told you the answer before you opened the fertilizer bag 🌿

For some vegetables, containers aren’t a limitation — they’re actually the reason the plants perform better. The controlled space can push plants to grow and produce more efficiently.

* **Peppers** grown in five-gallon buckets often produce more fruit because slightly restricted roots shift the plant’s energy from leafy growth into flowering and fruiting.

* **Cherry tomatoes** ripen faster in dark containers since the pot walls absorb heat and warm the root zone above normal ground temperature.

* **Lettuce** tends to bolt later in containers because you can quickly move the pot into afternoon shade when temperatures start rising.

* **Radishes** grow to harvest size sooner in containers because the soil usually stays looser and warmer than compact garden beds.

* **Beans** grown in vertical basket systems often yield more per plant thanks to improved airflow around the foliage.

* **Spring onions** grow faster in containers because their shallow roots benefit from consistent moisture that’s easier to control in a pot than in open soil.

🌱 **Tips to maximize container vegetable growth:**

* Use **five-gallon buckets** for peppers and tomatoes — large enough for roots but still compact enough to encourage productive growth.
* Choose **dark-colored pots** for heat-loving crops like tomatoes and peppers, and **light-colored containers** for lettuce and leafy greens that prefer cooler roots.
* **Elevate containers** on pot feet or bricks to improve drainage and airflow underneath.
* **Water daily during summer**, since container soil dries faster than garden beds.
* Move **lettuce and leafy greens into afternoon shade** once daytime temperatures regularly exceed 75°F (24°C).

Sometimes the garden bed isn’t the best option — for these crops, a simple bucket can deliver even better results. 🌿
