Sunburst St. John’s Wort is one of those shrubs that quietly does a lot in the garden, especially in Texas-style heat and sun. A few things that make it stand out:
* Huge golden-yellow flowers all summer long — the blooms almost look tropical against the blue-green foliage.
* Very heat and drought tolerant once established, so it handles Houston-area summers better than a lot of flowering shrubs.
* Native plant roots — it’s a selection of a Texas/native species, which means it’s generally tougher and more adapted than fussy ornamentals.
* Pollinator friendly — bees absolutely work the flowers.
* Nice texture year-round with rounded growth and attractive foliage.
* Easy size for landscapes — usually stays manageable around 3–4 feet tall and wide.
* Works in difficult spots like hell strips, sunny foundations, pollinator gardens, and xeriscapes.
* Deer resistant in many areas.
* Produces interesting seed capsules after flowering that add extra seasonal interest.
It also looks really good paired with plants like salvias, lantana, gregg’s mistflower, gaura, and ornamental grasses.
For best performance:
* Give it full sun.
* Don’t overwater once established.
* Prune lightly in late winter to keep it dense and full.
