Why are innacurate models of the solar system still being made? All the outer planets have rings? And where is Pluto and the Kuiper belt?

Pluto was discovered by a young amateur astronomer at NAU in Flagstaff in 1930. Clyde went to college after he discovered Pluto. He built his first telescope out of tractor and automobile parts.

The Planetary Academy is a kids membership to The Planetary Society designed for space enthusiasts ages 5-9.

I’ve been looking for this plant ever since I read about it in a garden book about three years ago and I found it in the “Charlie Brown” section at Sneeds Nursery. It has a bit of powdery mildew, but that’s just cosmetic and hopefully she will do great. If you’ve not been to Sneads Nursery you need to. I’ve been to hundreds and this one is in my top 10

Black stems, nodding indigo bells: 'Rooguchi' clematis is easy enough for beginners, cool enough for sophisticates.

It’s always great when you get a picture from the client. Really excited to touch base with them this winter, and come up with a solution for a clay soils. I suggested they hire a landscaping company that will put in and insure the plants. We had a really strange summer this last year, where it was really hot and the plants rotted that should not have. I will be at the meeting and this will be my first meeting of sorts, where I get plant veto power and they will show their expertise. I’m hoping for a great relationship. I do love the people at this nursery and I work with them a lot when I design. This is the first time doing so in this relationship. I’ll keep you posted how it goes.

I am a dumpster diver if that is the term. I often pull stuff out of trash and fix it up. My bedroom fan purrs and only needed a new cord. My latest find, just as my hose reel froze because I didn't put it in the shed, is commercial grade. It just needed a new threaded coupling. Retails for $250. After a $4 replacement part and some muscle I can now reel up 300 feet of hose.

The temperature is in the 70's and I think my potted Redbuds are the last to start to bud out, but my Dawn Redwoods and Bald Cypress have begun putting out their soft chartreuse needles and the fiddle necks of my diverse collection of ferns are uncoiling.

Longwood Gardens was the second remarkable garden I was lucky to visit in the summers on a day off from working at summer camp out side of Philadelphia.

Longwood is still probably the most remarkable garden I have seen so far. Someday, I would love to go back.

It is interesting to know that another chemical giant created a garden at the same time Dow was creating his humble garden. I wonder if they ever met and talked plants.

Happy Landscape Architecture Month!

In honor of the month and homework to myself, I'm going to post some of my favorite landscapes and landscape architects.

Today I will start with the garden and architect that started my love of landscapes and architecture set in it. The last set will be gardens that I would love to visit for the first time. If you have any suggestions, please send them to me.

Herbert Dow
-Dow Gardens,
-Midland Michigan
-1899

Also the founder of Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan Dow took flat farmland and created one of the most amazing gardens I have ever been to. It has seasonal interest, art and architecture. Also was also a calming place my late mother with Alzheimers and to me when I get to visit.

Here are some websites that can explain it better than I can, but if you are in middle Michigan it is a must see.
