We were very excited for the opportunity to install this Decorative Quartz Epoxy Flooring at the Mount Storm Power Station in West Virginia. This is one of the many Dominion Sub Stations we have had the pleasure of working on. We are grateful for the long-standing relationship we have built that allows us continued opportunities to work with Dominion. We are already planning more work out at Mount Storm thanks to the excellent work performed by DMA Floor’s epoxy crew and Senior Superintendent!

DMA Floors Transforms Service Entry at Sheehy Toyota of Stafford for Durability-- Sheehy Toyota of Stafford needed a durable floor for their drive through service entry that could withstand traffic, and not stain from gasoline and oil. We installed a cementitious urethane called Poly-Crete SL with a full sand broadcast for texture. We then top coated with Accelera which provides superior stain resistance in commercial setting. The color availability of the Accelera allowed for us to utilize safety red on the curbing, and separate greys for the walkways and drive through.

Azura Vascular Care | DMA Floors

Azura Vascular Care understands that facility management contributes to the quality of patient safety. While the VHHA conducted their 9th annual Virginia Patient Safety Summit in Richmond, VA, plans were already underway to improve the flooring at their Staples Mill Road location.

Known for their experience with upgrading floors in other healthcare facilities such as the MCV Pediatric ER and the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center (ECCC), DMA Floors installed new flooring at Azura Vascular Care over the weekend, to be sure they could serve patients without interruption.

How did they make that happen? Thanks to a fast-setting “broadcast flake” flooring from Dur-A-Flex called the Accelera C system. DMA Floors modified this system by using a combination of epoxy, urethane and Flint Earthstone Flake chips to build a floor that is easy to clean and maintain. It’s also durable enough to withstand heavy medical traffic.

Azura Vascular Care specializes in the critical maintenance and management of dialysis access. Dr’s Radack and Sutton treat and manage a range of vascular access issues using the latest in minimally invasive techniques in a safe and comfortable outpatient setting. They provide individualized care in a timely fashion so that you can return to your normal routine with minimal disruption to your regular dialysis schedule.

Is polished concrete good for bathrooms?

https://www.dmafloors.com/dma-floors-blog/entry/polished-concrete-is-it-good-for-any-room.html

We love to polish concrete, but we also know that polished concrete is not the best option every time. Polished concrete fails in this bathroom because of cleaning chemicals.

There are several places where polished concrete will not perform well. Bathrooms, labs, cafés, and dining room floors are subject to spills, which will stain a polished floor. The cleaning chemicals used for some of these floors will also cause damage. The polished concrete bathroom photo in this blog, for example, has a ring of discoloration caused by cleaning chemicals.

There is an alternative, and it mimics the look of polished concrete.

Polished Concrete Alternative:
We can install a clear urethane sealer, with or without stain, to give you the appearance of polished concrete. The great benefit to you, is that you can enjoy the finish of an exposed concrete floor, without the risk of damage that can mar polished concrete. The reason is simple: a urethane sealer renders the floor impermeable; it is no longer porous.

The installation process is straight forward, and it can be as economical as polished concrete. We begin by grinding concrete, the same way we would begin our concrete polishing process. Our goal is to make the concrete porous enough for the urethane sealer to bond properly.

For an existing floor we would do additional grinding as required, to remove glue, mortar, paint, epoxy, or any other floor reside. We would also do any needed repairs. After that we can install concrete stain to add color that will enhance the design elements of the space that you are building. At that point, we install 2 coats of clear urethane, and the floor is done!

Check out the floor shown in the photo, to get an idea for what your floor would look like after we install a high gloss urethane. We can install lower gloss urethane, if you prefer a matte or satin finish.

Either way, DMA Floors can install a floor for you that will yield a great, durable finish.

Would you like cream or salt & pepper with your polished concrete?

Polished floors are popular because they are durable and beautiful. You see them in restaurants, retail stores, offices, government buildings, public spaces, and even modern homes.

If you are interested in polished concrete for your next project, it’s helpful to understand the potential results, based on new or existing concrete in your space. Join the many happy customers who trust DMA Floors to achieve the best outcome.

------- What is aggregate concrete? -------
In general, concrete is made up of sand and different kinds of stone, also called aggregate. It’s layered, with the finest grains at the top level. The size of rocks and variety of materials increase as you move toward the bottom.

So, the level of aggregate determines the overall look of your floor. The more we grind, the more aggregate is exposed.

In the process we go from cream -- to salt & pepper -- to full aggregate exposure.

There are many floors sold as polished concrete that will dull/wear out quickly because they were not installed correctly. They look good when the job is turned over but they just don’t last. You get what you pay for so buyer beware!

You can shine a floor up very inexpensively but if not done correctly, it will not last very long. In a low-price bid world this can leave many people regretting their decision to use polished concrete which is disappointing since it is such an amazing floor finish when installed properly.

True polished concrete uses a multi-step process to “refine” the floor. The concrete becomes flatter and glossy at a microscopic level as heavy equipment grinds, hones and polishes the floor using progressively finer grit diamond impregnated pads. The result is not just a shiny floor, but a truly polished floor that will be beautiful and durable.

Did your flooring contractor do a good job with your polished concrete install?

There are 2 important ways to tell if the contractor did a good job:

Distinction of image (DOI):
A measure of how clearly an image will appear in a reflective surface. If the contractor takes a short cut in the process, he will not achieve a high DOI measurement. The images reflected will be distorted and mis-shaped.

Measurement is obtained using an Image Clarity Meter. Distinction of image should increase as the floor is polished from a low grit (lower than 400 grit) to a medium (400 grit) to a polished finish (800 grit) to a highly polished finish (1500 grit +).

Haze: .. cloudiness or milky appearance of the reflection of images in the floor caused by scratch patterns, and residue from densifiers or guards. Measurement of haze is obtained using a gloss meter.

Test standards should be included in the specifications to provide quantifiable expectations for a polished concrete floor. For reference, see the Polished Concrete Appearance Chart (Appearance Chart_10-25-2017.pdf (ascconline.org) ) from the Concrete Polishing Council. If the floor doesn’t test to meet these standards then it was not done correctly and you should not accept it!

Do you have a low bid on your polished concrete project?

"Polishing is a technical process with a bit of artistry. Anyone can be taught to stand behind a machine and move across a floor, but it takes a technical artist to do it right. The polisher needs to understand concrete and know how to read the floor and feel his machine. There is no set doctrine as to what it takes to polish concrete. Every slab is different and every bit of every slab is different. The polisher must know how to finesse the tools and work with the concrete to create art from the earth.”

Other factors that affect the quality and longevity of the floor:

---- Maximum Refinement

It takes time and patience to make several passes over the floor and achieve max refinement.

---- Use of a Guard/Sealer

Installers can cut corners by polishing a floor with 800 grit, then adding a guard/sealer to make it look like a 3000 grit. That shine wears off, though, and you are stuck with a less durable floor.

---- Densifiers

Densifiers increase the hardness of the floor during the polishing process. They need time to dry. Otherwise, the floor will be more prone to wear and tear.

---- Food/Stain Resistance

Experienced artisans go through several steps to help resist acidic or oily spills. If you miss a step, then it’s inevitable you will inherit that mess long-term.

Certainly low bidders may have the best intentions in their choice of products and procedures, but with the competitiveness of the bid process it is vital that you reviewed the details and vet the actual installer.

How long will polished concrete floors last?

A quality polished concrete job can last over 20 years. Why? It doesn’t sustain the same damage that softer flooring does and can stand up to heavy traffic.

Extend the life of your floor with proper maintenance, including a quick clean-up of acidic liquid spills or old batteries. Have a generous supply of absorbents handy. In warehouses and other industrial spaces, managing spills is built into their safety guidelines for workers.

Simple Elegance: A Historic Rebirth at a National Shrine in Williamsburg, VA

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham at Saint Bede Catholic received a complete interior renovation. This project began January 27, 2019 as a fundraising campaign called “Restore the Holy House.” Saint Bede reported, “major portions of the interior [that] have reached the end of their intended lifespan.” There are still opportunities on their website to support the effort.

DMA Floors partnered with Henderson, Inc. to completely revamp this historic building with the guidance of Construction Manager Bernie Mills and Superintendent Matt Hipple. The collaborative team effort put the design concept together from scratch, to create the beautiful layout for the porcelain tile floors, provided by International Tile and Marble.

How Today’s Carpet Tile Meets the Most Challenging Environments---
The days of “it’s just flooring” are long gone. The flooring of today has attributes that take into consideration such qualities as acoustics, comfort, and durability, to name a few. Even flooring technology has evolved to provide better options for clients with unique needs. Take one of the latest projects with DMA Floors and a local Richmond, Virginia client. They had specific requests, including a solution to a special flooring situation. DMA Floors was up to the challenge.

Partnering with the expertise of J&J Flooring and their product line, DMA Floors met those conditions and then some. The client ended up using a product called Kinetex. This is an advanced carpet tile that supports the demands of the education, healthcare and retail industries, with an impressive range of performance characteristics including quality, design, durability, comfort, ease of maintenance and safety. For this application, the big win was that Kinetex has a lifetime warranty in terms of moisture – up to 100% Rh, using their PreFix prior to installation. This system improves air quality by reducing the amount of allergens in the air, which is a health-conscious client’s dream. The sustainability of Kinetex is amazing, reusing 45% of post-consumer content and 50% lower impact than other carpet tiles. This would be an eye catcher for any company wanting to lower their environmental footprint.

The resulting successful project can be attributed to: (1) Providing outstanding customer service, (2) excellent products, and (3) extensive vendor knowledge. It's not just flooring anymore, as new materials, fresh ideas and innovative ways to combine form and function create a dynamic market. DMA Floors will continue to educate and meet the ever-changing product requests of our customer base, with the same desire and passion about flooring that has allowed us to grow our business.
