'Cinderella' Swamp Milkweed's vanilla-scented flowers are a treat for the senses. Deep pink petals with white centers bloom in 2” wide clusters.

Asclepias incarnata ‘Cinderella’, commonly known as Swamp Milkweed, is a highly popular, easy-care native perennial. Celebrated for its stunning clusters of vanilla-scented, pale to vibrant rose-pink flowers, it is a crucial nectar source for butterflies and the primary host plant for Monarch butterfly caterpillars. The vanilla-scented flowers last well in water and attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Plants bloom best in full sun but can tolerate a bit of shade. They grow naturally in wet places along streams and ponds. Swamp Milkweed will grow in heavy, wet soil or in good garden soil and are perfect for rain gardens. Plants are deer-resistant and heat-tolerant, too. Available in the garden center.

Many of us will be out and about this weekend now that the weather is finally breaking and choosing our perennials, annuals, vegetables and plants for the gardening season that is finally upon us. While we'll be thinging about what goes with what and how do these look; don't forget these plants are just like us and need a healthy medium to nourish themselves with also. Feed Your Plants and they will reward you all season long with more spectacular blossoms, healthier growth and productivity and be more disease and pest resistant.

Feeding plants with soil amendments improves soil structure, aeration, and nutrient retention for long-term health, rather than just providing a quick nutrient boost like fertilizer. Essential organic amendments include compost, aged manure, and worm castings, which improve soil texture and moisture retention.

Think of soil as the blank slate for gardening and each amendment you add as the building blocks for healthy crops. Earthworm castings, or worm debris, ncontain trace elements and water-soluble nutrients that seep slowly into the soil, making themselves available to plants. Castings aerate the soil and provide nutrients for beneficial microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and worms. Reapply castings quarterly, mixed into potting mixes, or at the time of transplant.

Organic amendments contain lower NPK levels. They typically contain micronutrients plants need and continue feeding the soil for much longer. Organic options are more sustainable, healthier for the planet, and won’t cause concern for run-off or chemical leaching concerns. It’s easy to grab synthetics when you want immediate results, but organics are the way to go if you’re in it for the long haul.
