Put down the WD-40. 🙅 Here’s what you actually need to know:
WD-40 is one of the most common things homeowners reach for when their garage door starts squeaking… and it’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Despite the name, WD-40 stands for “Water Displacement, 40th formula.” It’s a degreaser and water displacer, not a true lubricant.
Here’s what it actually does to your garage door:
❌ Strips away existing lubrication from springs, hinges, and rollers
❌ Attracts dirt and grime, creating buildup over time
❌ Leaves metal parts unprotected and accelerates wear
❌ May quiet the squeak temporarily, but makes the problem worse long-term
What you SHOULD use:
✅ Silicone-based spray lubricant- ideal for hinges, rollers, and tracks
✅ White lithium grease- great for springs and metal-on-metal contact points
These products are specifically designed to provide lasting lubrication without breaking down under temperature changes… which matters a lot here in Western Colorado.
