We get asked about our soil a lot. We compost everything from the farm so we make most of the soil we use. But we do make a soil mix that is used for all of our starts and is also compostable, so we can reuse all of it.
I wanted to show what I make for the farm, for family, for friends, and for clients. It will cost about $50-60 at Lowe's, and is what I've used for years. This will work for all your plants and is enough to get your herbs, vegetables, and medicine through their entire cycle with only water. You can add fertilizer to encourage and promote more vigorous growth, but this is an easy and cost effective way to grow without needing anything else but the sun!
Recipe:
1 bag Mushroom Compost - $4
1 bag Organic Compost - $4
1 bag Steer Manure - $4
1 Block of Sunshine Mix #4 - $40
Directions:
Combine all three bags of Compost, Manure, and the Block of Sunshine together, and Mix Thoroughly!
That's it! Simple, easy, and effective!
Now, remember to keep your bags!!!
Save your soil bags, because after you Mix everything together, you can refill the bags and store your ready made soil!
Another thing to consider..
This is a 1:1 Mix for this soil. If you only need to fill a three gallon pot, you can mix only what you need! Check it out👇
Say you don't have the means or the room to mix all of these, because let's be real, we don't all have garages or an urban farm to do this sort of thing.
So, If you need to make enough for a 3 gallon pot and Don't/Can't mix all of it together, use the 1:1 ratio. Take a one gallon container, a pitcher, or an empty pot, and fill it to the top with one each of the recipe!
So a gallon of Mushroom, a gallon of Organic, a gallon of Manure, and a gallon of Sunshine Mix, stir it up, and you have your 1:1 mix.
This will work for any size container if you can't mix it all. Need a small batch? Use a solo cup of each, Bam! Need more than a solo cup? An empty pot of each and there you go!
This is our tried and true method for growing our starts every year. If you have any questions or need any guidance, please let us know, we are more than glad to help!
Happy Growing!
