When we partner together as a community, the possibilities are endless!

A huge thank you to Debbie Miller of Benson, who donated 8 tomato cages with stakes. Scott Thompson (Kayla Thompson) kindly provided transportation today, and they're now all installed and ready for planting in a couple weeks, as weather allows. A group of kids from the community is scheduled to help with transplanting in early May.

Many hands make the workload manageable, even light. If you want to get involved, there is also space for you. Drop me a note!

I am hoping to put more tomato plants into the Sidewalk Garden this year than we've had in previous years. In 2025, ripe tomatoes were quickly and consistently harvested throughout the season, and I imagine demand will be even higher this year. I am looking to use garden funds to buy more heavy-duty tomato cages (like those pictured), as well as T-posts to support them, unless someone has ones they're willing to donate. Do you know of anyone local selling these? And if we can find some, would anyone be able to volunteer a pickup truck to transport them?

Edited to add: we could use as many as 10 more cages, as well as T-posts (6 or 7 ft).

Figs, asparagus seedlings, onions, snapdragons, stevia, and snacking peppers.

Given that this is the gardening off season, I've been pretty quiet on here. Despite the cold, even now, the garden can provide beauty of we're willing to look. The ever greens, the dried up stalks, the unique and interesting seed pods... And then there are always the everlasting (dried) flowers.

If you are thinking about starting new garden space, you can do a few simple things now, to make that process easier! Find some plain cardboard and lay it in a single layer over the space where you want to grow next year (overlapping so no soil is exposed). You can also use thick layers of newspaper for this. Then cover it with leaves, straw, or compost. Weigh it down with some stakes/fencing material. By next spring when it's time to plant, the grass/weeds underneath should be largely dead and gone, and you can plant directly without tilling.

Is it the perfect seed bed you get from tilling? Nope. But it's inexpensive, low-labor, and ideal for long-term soil health if you don't have serious / invasive perennial weeds in your yard.

I'm so thankful for community! With the help of Dave Schwind and Chris Fehr on Saturday, and Pam Hummel with her group of middle school students on Monday, the Sidewalk Garden is cleaned up and ready for winter! Dozens of daffodil bulbs were also planted!
❤️ Thank you so much for your gift of your time! ❤️

And now we rest and dream of next season!

It's time to cleanup the sidewalk garden and start dreaming of next season! On Saturday (11/1) from 1:30-3:30, I'd welcome your help clearing out dead plants, and if time permits, begin to plant daffodil bulbs to enjoy for years to come. All ages can help! Whether you can help for 10 minutes or a couple hours, your time would be a gift. If you have them, bring gloves, pruners, loppers, rakes, etc.

If you are digging and dividing early spring bulbs in the next few weeks and have extras, I'd welcome the chance to add them to the daffodils planted in the sidewalk garden in 2024. I'm looking for types where their foliage dies back by early summer, such as daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths. That way, summer veggies can be planted after them. Otherwise, I'll plan to use a little of the raised funds from donations and flower sales, to buy some bulbs once temps cool and we finally get some rain.

Who needs flowers today? You are welcome to stop by and take a bouquet, simply because you welcome the joy of flowers. You're also welcome to leave a donation of any amount for the sidewalk garden, but not required! May your day be marked by beauty and kindness!

(There are also surplus tomatoes available.)
