Late summer is one of our favorite times to plant perennials—and the next few weeks are looking about as good as we could ask for. 🌿

Warm soil encourages strong root growth, while moderating temperatures make it easier for newly planted perennials to settle in. Plant now, water as needed, and they’ll have a head start before winter—and be ready to take off next spring.

And if you need a little inspiration, here’s what late summer looks like in our gardens right now: Black-eyed Susans, phlox, hibiscus, asters, horse mint, and plenty more bringing color, texture, and life to the landscape.

Late summer isn’t the end of the gardening season. For perennials, it can be one of the best times to begin!

Every visit to the nursery comes with a chance to see nature doing its thing. 🌿

This week we’ve been entertained by Tiger Swallowtails stopping in for a snack on ‘Jeana’ Garden Phlox, baby birds tucked safely into a nest, and even a tiny crab spider enjoying the fruits of its labor (don’t worry… it’s all part of nature’s plan!).

We may grow the plants, but the butterflies, birds, bees, and other garden residents are the ones who really bring this place to life.

Come take a walk through the nursery and gardens—you never know what you’ll discover. 🦋🐦🕷️

Obedient Plant may be known for its unusual flowers that stay in place when gently moved (at least temporarily)—but its real value is the wildlife it supports. 🌸🐝

This Indiana native produces tall spikes of pink, tubular flowers that are especially attractive to bumblebees and other long-tongued native bees. Butterflies and hummingbirds may also stop by for nectar during its late-summer bloom period, when reliable food sources are especially important.

Obedient Plant grows best in sun to part sun and average to moist soil. It can spread over time, making it a great choice for larger pollinator gardens, rain gardens, naturalized plantings, and other spaces where it has room to grow.

🌿 We’re back open for business! 🌿

With air quality now in a much healthier range, Sanctuary Native Nursery will be open Saturday from 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

The temperature and precipitation outlook is also favorable for the next week or so, making this a great time to get summer-blooming native plants in the ground. Adding blooms now provides valuable nectar and pollen when many of our native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are especially active. 🐝🦋

Due to the poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke across our region, Sanctuary Native Nursery will be closed today.

Some plants are simply better together—and Wild Quinine (Parthenium integrifolium) and Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) are a perfect example.

While Purple Coneflower steals the spotlight with its bold pink blooms, Wild Quinine quietly ties the whole planting together with clusters of creamy-white flowers that bloom at the same time. The contrasting colors make each plant stand out even more, creating a display that looks intentional rather than chaotic.

But this pairing is about more than looks.

- Both thrive in full sun and well-drained soils.
- Both are magnets for native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
- Even after flowering, both plants provide attractive seed heads and winter interest for birds and the landscape.

“Awww, they’re so cu… OUCH!” 🌵

Prickly Pear Cactus has officially entered the chat — and it did not come here to be hugged.

This tough little native cactus is built for the kind of hot, dry, crispy summer spots that make other plants wave a tiny white flag. Full sun? Great. Sandy or gravelly soil? Perfect. Dry slope? Bring it on. That sun-baked corner of the garden where everything else throws a tantrum? Prickly Pear says, “Finally, someone understands me.”

And then, just when you think it’s all attitude, it blooms with gorgeous yellow flowers that pollinators love. Beauty, grit, and a strong personal-boundary policy? We respect it.
