We have the answer to our last post!

This ostrich chick is 6 months old!

Ostriches are one of the fastest-growing birds in the world. During their first year, they can grow nearly a foot per month and reach close to their adult height by 12 months of age. While they may look almost full-grown, they will continue to fill out and develop for several more years.

Thanks to everyone who joined in the guessing game! Were you close? Let us know in the comments.

Baby ostriches grow incredibly fast, but it can still be tricky to tell their age just by looking at them. This little one is curious, active, and already exploring the world around it.

We'll reveal the correct age later. Let's see who gets closest!

As an ostrich farmer, I’ve learned that respecting these animals is the only way we can work together safely. Cieguito (“blind one”) seems to understand that better than anyone. Today he even helped me pull the chain to lock the gate!

I hope y’all are staying cool in this hot weather! Even the animals are looking for shade and extra water breaks today. Stay hydrated out there!

We came home late last night, which meant egg collection had to happen after dark. Normally that wouldn’t be a big deal… except when you’re driving into an ostrich pen in pitch black conditions. We can see ahead of us but not around us.

Luckily, the egg was laid close to the fence and the ostriches were all across the pen, so we were able to come up with a creative way to safely collect it without going inside.

Farm life is full of adapting, and problem solving.

Did you know that some ostriches have bright reddish-pink necks while others have more gray coloring?

The red neck coloring is more common in certain ostrich subspecies originally from areas of East Africa. During breeding season, males can develop even brighter red coloring on their necks and legs to attract females and show dominance. Ostriches with more gray necks are often linked to South African lineages.

Nature gave these birds some pretty amazing variety.
