I was in the woods collecting Spice Berries today. Every year is always different for all the different seeds. A lot of plants including the Spicebush got knocked back hard with the 3 months of no rain last fall. Seed production is down while the plants recover. Thank goodness we had good rain fall all summer.

If you have a big spot to fill, consider Rudbeckia lacinata (Cutleaf Coneflower). It is a plants that I consider a living bird feeder! The finches are going crazy right now look for any seeds.
As an added bonus, the young leaves are edible like spinach in the spring. I have put them in quiche before and I couldn’t tell the difference.

I see a lot of posts about Tussock moth caterpillars on milkweed. They can look scary because there are so many but they are also part of the ecosystem and food web. Luckily I have a lot of Common Milkweed for them to munch on!

Here is the best way to collect and clean milkweed seed pods. They will still be green but the seeds are all ripe inside. This way you won’t have the fuzzy parts all over your house! This is Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca). This holds true for all the different species. You will usually have to sacrifice a pod or two though to see if they are actually ripe.

The Cardinal Flowers are doing their thing right now and the butterflies and hummingbirds are very happy! Many people think they need to be in a moist spot. Mine have been in the same dry spot at home for several years. When it gets really dry, I throw the sprinkler on them for a good soak.

This spiny little guy was on Big Leaf Asters this morning. It reminds me of a Saddleback Caterpillar, and those sting! Always keep in mind that many of the spiny caterpillars do sting. If anyone knows what kind it is, let me know.
