Labor Day weekend seems like an appropriate time to share a room designed around the idea of rest and quiet luxury.
This cedar covered house is built into a wooded hillside overlooking parkland. From its expansive windows, there is almost no evidence of the built world—just trees, changing light and the landscape beyond.
I wanted the bedroom to feel as though it belonged there. Natural slate, walnut, leather and softly textured silk create warmth without asking for attention. There is very little in the room that is there simply to fill it.
The room itself is an unusual five-sided shape. Rather than trying to correct its irregularity, I let it become part of the design. The bed found its place on an angle—not because symmetry demanded it, but because somehow, that is where it felt right.
Perhaps that is what I love about Wabi-Sabi. It leaves room for irregularity, for natural materials, for restraint—and for the possibility that something doesn’t need to be perfected to feel complete.
