Happy Roots Plant Nursery

Happy Roots Plant Nursery Garden enthusiast. Built from the ground up entirely by family and friends to nudge our community forward to self-sustainability through gardening.

There are so many great reasons these days for growing your own food and we would like to encourage everyone to take advantage of what we have to offer. It is our second year doing this and appreciate all the support!

Taking our first three rescue hens home was the start of my journey to changing my heart and mind about these beautiful ladies…….

I started seeing individuals…….

and from there followed the transition to a vegan/plant based/ethical diet however you want to label it. I don’t like labels, I don’t like grouping and naming because a heap of assumptions are then made about those groups!!

I simply made the decision to not support cruelty wherever possible, not just with food!!

I find the debates about welfare and diets very distracting from the bottom line!! Which in my opinion is - if you don’t want to support cruelty by consuming animal products- don’t!!

The cruelty in the egg industry lies way before a young hen has her destination decided!! Ie which welfare system she will enter. This simply determines how she will live for the 56 weeks she is there.

The cruelty begins in the breeding farms where hens and cockerels are confined to simply produce the fertile eggs for the hatcheries.

Their lives are unseen and unthought of more than the egg laying hens who produce the eggs for market!! But are rife with cruelty.

So the decision to eat a higher welfare egg simply improves some aspects of a small section of a life.

It does not remove cruelty. A step in the right direction many say to justify not having to change! I disagree.

See the individual and you too will understand it is not possible to remove the harm, unless you remove the source of that harm and that is people buying eggs!!
