When Ventilation Is Overlooked, Roofs Can Age Fast 🏠

This roof was only 13 years old, but it had already aged much faster than it should have. One of the major issues we found was improper attic ventilation.

Our solution wasn’t just to put another roof over the problem. We removed the gutter, fascia metal, and soffit so we could properly address the ventilation. We cut in new intake vents through the soffit, allowing the attic to breathe properly and helping the new roofing system perform the way it was designed to.

After correcting the ventilation issue, we installed the customer a brand-new roof that, with proper installation, and ventilation, should provide 25–40 years of service

Be careful who you hire! Proper Nail Placement & Shingle Spacing Matter More Than You Think

These photos are a perfect example of why roofing isn’t just about putting shingles on a roof—it’s about installing the entire roofing system correctly.

One of the biggest issues we see is improper nail placement. Nails should be driven in the manufacturer’s designated nailing zone. When nails are placed too high, too low, or outside the nail line, the shingles aren’t properly secured. This can lead to:

* Shingles lifting or blowing off in high winds.
* Water finding its way beneath the shingles.
* Manufacturer warranties being voided.
* A roof that fails years before it should.

Another concern shown here is poor shingle spacing and alignment. Shingles should be installed with consistent offsets and proper exposure. When they’re rushed or spaced incorrectly:

* Water channels don’t shed as designed.
* The roof becomes more vulnerable to leaks.
* The finished roof has a wavy, uneven appearance.
* Overall performance and lifespan are reduced.

A roof is only as good as the quality of its installation. Even premium shingles can’t perform properly if they aren’t installed according to manufacturer specifications.

This photo is a perfect example of something homeowners may never notice—but it matters.

Using different brands of synthetic underlayment on the same roof isn’t a best practice. Every manufacturer designs their roofing system to work together, and mixing products can create several issues:
