2020 Winter
We have both a hydroponic (pictures) and an Aquaponics garden this winter. The first batch of watercress has sprouted as well as some romaine lettuce. The watercress will be ready to transfer to the Aquaponics garden by November 15, 2020. Stay tuned for a nifty way to feed your goldfish.

It is simple to match the temperature of the water when moving fish, however, pH is another matter. When we started this over 5 years ago we said we would never get stuck in the trap of chasing the pH. Establishing a good natural buffer system is the way to go. Our research found that the difference in pH should be no greater than 0.3. We were over that. We used a potassium hydroxide solution as many plants need potassium and some quick math, which we cut in half so we would not add too much and overshoot the target. We hit the target and all 4 goldfish (AKA Kraken) are safe and eating in their new home.

Can you see them now?

We did chemistry for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and took pH and temperature readings. It is critical to match the temperature and pH. We ran tests on the tank water (seeded with pond water) and the pond water. We were surprised that the nitrogen chemistries were all zero. The pond biology system was converting the fish p*e to nitrates which were being taken up by plant life. Perfect.

As it is getting cold again, the 4 gold fish have been brought inside. This year the set up used involved all of the plants “floating” in the chicken wire above the water. With lots of rain the water level needed was easy to maintain. However, the water became a bit murky. Can you find the fish?

For the last two years Fishy Business has been growing edibles in an outdoor pond aquaponics system we have been experimenting with. The same gold fish have been used each year. We started with 12 and now have 4. This video shows them being released into outdoor pond after wintering inside.
