𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗼 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱? 𝗔 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 & 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵

Most people assume that roots stop at the drip line, but lateral roots on a mature tree routinely extend up to 3x the canopy radius. These roots sit almost entirely in the top 24 inches of soil, right where your pipes, foundation, and pavement are.

A willow near a water source can push roots 100 feet or more. A maple's shallow root system is one of the most common causes of lifted sidewalks in older neighborhoods. Even a relatively young tree can have roots 10 to 15 feet out from the trunk.

Pest of the Week: Gold Spotted Oak Borer 🪲

Since 2004, gold spotted oak borers have killed hundreds of thousands of California oaks. Gold spotted oak borers are native to Arizona and Mexico, but arrived in San Diego two decades ago and has been devastating California oak populations ever since. If you have oaks, it's worth knowing about the gold spotted oak borer.

Keep an eye out for:
🔴 Reddish staining or weeping spots on the trunk
🪵 D-shaped exit holes in the bark
🪾 Crown thinning and dieback

Treatment options include bifenthrin or emamectin benzoate applications, but heavily infested trees often need to be removed. The key is chipping infested wood immediately to prevent spread. For areas with ongoing pressure, consider planting more resistant oak varieties when replacing trees.

Mushrooms at the root flare, soft bark near the ground, a lean that's gotten worse — these aren't cosmetic issues. They're structural ones. A tree with significant basal decay can fail without warning, even on a calm day.

Some trees can be stabilized when caught early, whereas others need to be removed. Either way, the answer starts with a professional assessment.

Pest of the Week: Cherry Bark Tortrix 🦋

That reddish brown resin oozing from your fruit tree bark might not be sap — It could be a sign of cherry bark tortrix.

This invasive, bark-boring moth mainly targets mature fruit trees, especially at pruning wounds, cankers, or bark cracks. The larvae feed on tissue beneath the bark, cutting off nutrient and water supply. Left unchecked, they can kill limbs or entire trees.

Keep an eye out for:
🟤 Reddish brown, gummy resin oozing from bark
✂️ Damage concentrated at pruning wounds or cracks
🪵 Dead wood harboring larvae

What makes this pest particularly aggressive in the Pacific Northwest is the lack of natural enemies. In its native Eurasian range, natural predators manage the population. Without these controls in North America, they spread much more aggressively.

Treatment exists, but prevention matters just as much. Careful pruning practices that minimize wounds and removing infested bark go a long way.

You begin to notice crusty bumps on stems, sticky residue below, and a tree that's slowly declining. Scale insects are easy to miss until the infestation is already established.

Light cases on small plants can sometimes be managed with manual removal or oils. For larger trees or widespread infestations, professional treatment usually works better and faster.
