Pest of the Week: Scale Insects ๐ฑ
Those small bumps on your tree bark might not be debris. They could be scale insects, actively feeding right now.
Scale insects are deceptive. Instead of looking like typical insects, they appear as small. crusty bumps clinging to bark and branches. However, underneath those protective shells, they're sucking sap and weakening your tree. Oaks, maples, elms, pines, magnolia, and most ornamental trees and shrubs are especially at risk.
Keep an eye out for:
๐ค Small bumps or crusty patches on bark and branches
๐ฏ Sticky honeydew dripping from foliage
๐ฟ Mold on leaves and below the tree
๐ Yellowing or discolored foliage
Treatment timing is everything. Systemic insecticides like imidacloprid, dinotefuran, or acephate are most effective when scales are just emerging. Pruning heavily infested branches or power washing bark can physically removes scale insects.
