Tomato Hornworms: Friend or Foe?
I found tomato hornworms on my tomato plants—and I’m a little torn about what to do with them! 🍅🐛
These guys can devour tomato leaves (and sometimes the tomatoes) incredibly fast, but the caterpillar is only one stage of their life cycle. Eventually, they become beautiful hawkmoths that visit flowers and can serve as pollinators.

So what do I do? I’ll probably remove most of them to protect my tomatoes—usually by hand-picking them and giving my chickens a treat—but I may leave a few because I really enjoy seeing the moths later in the season.

Sometimes the “pest” in your garden is just one stage of something pretty amazing.

My Beautiful Hollyhocks Have Rust! 🌸
Remember those beautiful hollyhocks I showed in my raised bed garden? Unfortunately, they’ve developed hollyhock rust.

You can see the rust-colored pustules on the infected leaves, so my first step is removing as much of the affected foliage as I can and throwing it away—not composting it or leaving it in the garden where the spores can spread.

Then I’m going to treat the remaining plant with a fungicide labeled for rust and hope I can protect the healthy foliage and keep these hollyhocks going.

Sometimes gardening is just as much about solving problems as it is enjoying the flowers! 🌿🌸

Why I Mix Flowers with Vegetables in My Raised Beds
My raised bed garden has grown a little this year—I added a third bed this spring! 🌿🍅🌻
One of my favorite gardening tips is to mix flowers with vegetables. Not only does it add beauty and color, but flowers like salvia, marigolds, hollyhocks, and sunflowers help attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators that benefit the entire garden.

This year I'm growing tomatoes, peppers, okra, cut flowers, lemongrass, and more. It's a garden that's both productive and beautiful!

How to Prune Basil for a Bigger Harvest
Want fresh basil all summer and into the fall? 🌿

I let my basil get a little too far this year, and it started flowering. Once basil begins to bloom, the leaves can become more bitter and the plant shifts its energy toward producing seeds instead of new leaves.

The good news? A simple pruning can encourage fresh growth and help keep your basil producing for the rest of the season.

Don't be afraid to give your basil a haircut—it will thank you!

My parents have spent decades creating and caring for these gardens, and many of the ideas I use today can be traced back to what I learned walking these paths as a child.

My hibiscus leaves were getting chewed up, and when I looked closer, I found the culprit: hibiscus sawfly larvae. 🌺🐛

There were a lot of them, so I’m removing the most affected leaves first, which should also remove many of the larvae at the same time. Then I’ll spray the remaining foliage with insecticidal soap, making sure to follow the label and get good coverage where the larvae are feeding.

It’s a good reminder to inspect your plants closely. Sometimes the damage is obvious long before the pest is easy to spot!

Mid-Summer Petunia Pruning: Fixing Leggy Growth
By mid-summer, petunias can start looking tired, stretched out, and leggy—especially after weeks of heat, rain, and heavy blooming. 🌸✂️

A good cutback may feel drastic, but trimming petunias helps encourage fresh growth, a fuller shape, and more blooms for the rest of the season. After pruning, give them a little water, sunshine, and fertilizer, and they usually bounce back looking much better.
Sometimes the best way to refresh a plant is to be brave with the clippers!

A little patriotic color for the garden! Red, white, and blue flowers are an easy way to dress up containers, porches, and outdoor spaces for the Fourth of July—and they can continue adding color well beyond the holiday.

What’s Causing My Tomato Leaves to Twist?
Several tomato plants in my raised beds have developed unusual twisting and distorted new growth. 🍅🌿

I haven’t seen whiteflies, yellowing, or the type of leaf curl I would normally associate with some tomato diseases, but I can’t completely rule those causes out. Based on the appearance and the timing, I’m wondering whether the plants may have been exposed to herbicide drift from a nearby lawn treatment.

The cause isn’t confirmed, so I’m going to remove only the worst damaged growth, care for the plants as usual, and watch the new leaves closely to see whether they recover. Gardening sometimes involves a little detective work!

Early Summer Perennial Cleanup | Part 2: Trimming Lamb’s Ear
Lamb’s ear adds beautiful softness and texture to the garden, but by early summer it may need a little cleanup. 🌿✂️ Removing spent flower stalks and tired foliage helps the plant look neater and makes room for fresh growth.
