Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is a year-round threat to hemlock trees, reproducing twice a year asexually. Its eggs survive the winter in wool-like sacs on branches and hatch in early spring, spreading quickly.

Understanding its life cycle is key. Treatments are most effective when timed from fall through early spring when they are feeding.

Do your weekend plans involve planting trees? Avoid your projects from erupting into a “treemergency,” and avoid ‘volcano mulching,’ as depicted here.

As the phrase suggests, volcano mulching is when mulch is piled up around the tree trunk like a volcano. This over-mulching harms the tree’s trunk and roots, making it more susceptible to improper root growth, decay, and infestation from insects and small animals.

Instead, keep the mulch flat and away from the tree trunk. A shallow layer of mulch, about 2-3” deep, should be applied with about 3” of space between the base of the tree and the mulch. Let your tree breathe!
