Avery graduated from LTU with her undergrad in Architecture and showcased her final project “The Crossing” which focused on mass timber multifamily construction. Joshua graduated from Ball State University with his NAAB accredited undergrad in architecture and showcased his final thesis “Reference Realism” which highlighted an efficient approach to designing slightly curved, constructible forms. As we close out Black History Month, SVA proudly celebrates the pioneers who shaped the foundation of architecture and opened doors for generations to come.
We honor Robert Robinson Taylor, recognized as the first Black licensed architect in the United States, whose legacy paved the way for equity in design and education.
We celebrate Beverly Lorraine Greene, the first Black woman licensed as an architect in the U.S., whose brilliance and perseverance continue to inspire women in architecture today.
And we recognize Donald White, the first licensed Black architect in Michigan, whose impact helped shape communities through thoughtful design.
At SVA, we stand on the shoulders of these innovators. Today and every day, we honor their vision, resilience, and lasting influence on the built environment.

As part of our 60th Anniversary celebration, we are reaching into the archives to showcase projects that have defined our firms history over the last six decades! To kick things off, we’re looking back at a piece of Michigan sports history. We highlight a proposal for Detroit Metropolitan Stadium (Later the Pontiac Silverdome and home of the Lions from 1975-2001). These drawings, made in 1971, were submitted to a design competition that would decide the architect of the stadium.
