Two flags I’m proud of today.

1. Old Glory — Flag Day.
2. My son’s 13th birthday. Official teenager.

Why I’m weekends-only at Hoo’s Handy: I drive for UPS 50+ hours M-F. And I’m working a Dave Ramsey debt snowball.

Goal: Be debt-free. Then Hoo’s Handy goes full-time.

Truth: My kids hate UPS. Because they never see me. 12 years as a butcher working 2 jobs, 9 years at UPS — I’ve missed a lot.

Having a 13-year-old teaches you time doesn’t snowball. It just… goes.

So I keep Hoo’s Handy small on purpose. Under $950 jobs. Weekends only. Military discount on every job because I love this country and service members.

I started this for folks who feel like they have nobody — elderly, vulnerable, military families, anyone in a hard season. Same reason I’m off today: Family first.

“Honesty. Integrity. Service.” That’s on my shirt. But it starts at home. If I’m buried in debt or buried in work, I can’t serve you OR them well.

Hanging it up for a week.

Shirt’s on the hanger. Phone’s going in the glovebox. Hoo’s Handy is closed till Wednesday night.

Real talk: It’s 8pm Friday and I’m still packing. Tomorrow morning = running around, not running quotes. No calls, no emails, no “quick job” till Thursday 6/18

Why? I drive for UPS 50+ hours M-F. Then I’m in your houses every weekend. Family time lost the math. So we’re taking a few days.

If you message me Sat-Wed: You won’t hear back till Thursday. I’m not ignoring you — I’m actually off for once.

Why I won’t take your $5,000 bathroom remodel — and why Virginia law says that protects YOU.

In Virginia, anyone doing a job over $1,000 OR that requires a building permit MUST be a licensed Class A, B, or C contractor.

I’m a handyman. Not a licensed contractor. And that’s on purpose.

Here’s what that means for you:

1. Jobs under $950 = No permit = No red tape
VA lets me handle small repairs, maintenance, and installs without permits if the total is under $1,000 and no structural/electrical/plumbing changes are made.
You get: Faster scheduling, flat-rate pricing, no inspection delays. Done in a day.

2. If I said “yes” to your deck build, you’d be the one at risk
Unlicensed work over $1,000 in VA = illegal. If something fails, your homeowner’s insurance can deny the claim. If the county finds out, YOU get fined — not just me.
Me saying “no” = I’m protecting your house and your wallet.

3. The $950 cap isn’t random — it’s VA law + safety margin
I cap at $950 so we never accidentally cross that $1,000 line with tax/materials. No gray area. No “oops.” You’re protected.

What I CAN do under VA law:
✅ Leaky faucet/toilet repair or replace — like-for-like
✅ Light fixtures, ceiling fans — swap existing
✅ TV mounting, shelves, curtain rods
✅ Caulk, drywall patches, door hardware
✅ Furniture/assembly, punch lists
All on existing plumbing/wiring. No moving pipes. No new circuits. No structural.

What VA law says I CAN’T touch without a contractor license:
❌ Moving plumbing or adding new water lines
❌ Running new electrical circuits or panel work
❌ HVAC, gas line work
❌ Decks, additions, structural changes
❌ Anything requiring a building permit

“But my cousin’s handyman did my whole kitchen…”
He broke the law. If that kitchen floods, your insurance can say “unpermitted work” and pay $0. I won’t put you in that spot.

This is why Hoo’s Handy only books small jobs:
Because I’d rather turn down work than put your home at risk. Flat-rate, under $950, weekends only, 90-day warranty. You know the price, you know it’s legal, you know it’s done right.

🏖️ Heading out on vacation soon? Here's a quick checklist before you lock up:

🔧 Walk every faucet and check shut off valves under sinks — a slow drip left unattended for a week becomes a real problem

🔧 Turn your water heater to vacation mode to save energy

🔧 Test smoke and CO detectors — fresh batteries before you leave

🔧 Check weatherstripping on doors and windows — summer heat and humidity get in fast through worn seals

🔧 Unplug small appliances — toasters, coffee makers, anything drawing standby power

🔧 Set your thermostat to 78-80 — keeps humidity down without running AC constantly

🔧 Something I'm changing about how I handle drywall jobs going forward.

Drywall done right takes time. Specifically:

✅ Minimum 3 coats on ceiling patches
✅ Premixed all purpose compound for finish coats — not fast setting
✅ Hand sand the finish work — feel the surface, not just see it
✅ Allow full dry time between coats — 24 hours minimum

The biggest mistake homeowners and handymen both make — rushing it.

Because of this I'm updating my process. Any drywall repair requiring a smooth finish now requires two separate visits minimum. One to patch and build coats. One to finish and prime.

Better results. No shortcuts. That's the standard.
