Here is a look at the van as good as it is ever going to look before we start abusing it. Still need to figure out dusk collection for the saws. I’m assuming some sort of cordless vacuum would work but I haven’t decided which one to go with yet. I spent much of the first two months of this year rethinking my business. Last week I finished reworking my office. Tonight I finished reworking my workshop. Later this week I will wrap up reworking my van. Next week I will start to wrap up reworking my files. I have been so business working in the business the last couple years that I was way behind on working on the business. I know it to be true that it is important for the profitability, efficiency and longevity to adapt and change but it is really hard to stop working and really scrutinize my shortcomings that have created weak points in the business. As my news systems have slowly come together work is quickly getting easier and more enjoyable. It is encouraging me to keep putting in the excruciatingly boring work that makes all the difference none of the praise in a business.

I always wondered if it was possible to fit a miter saw and tablesaw inside a van set up and ready to work and the answer is… Kind of. We won’t be using this set up often or for any sort of production work but hopefully it will save time when we are doing a one cut job.
Obviously it’s nowhere near completion but it’s a good start for a couple of days work.

The first thing to consider when you want to renovate your basement is do you plan on renovating any of the upper floors in the future. Would you like to get your kitchen remodeled in two years or perhaps add that primery bathroom suite? If you want to work with me, I am going to strongly encourage you postpone that basement renovation until you have completely finish the upper floors because if you don’t, you are going to be doing some demolition in your beautiful new basement to bring dedicated lines to the new spaces, new pipes or even dropping down a structural post in the middle of your new playroom. On this project we were renovating most of the house with the exception of the primary bathroom. We went ahead and ran two dedicated 20 amp lines to the old bathroom as well as two 3/4” pipes before we wrapped up this basement renovation. At least the clients know that they have most of the infrastructure they need in primary bathroom when and if they decide to update. I feel like there’s a misconception that finishing your basement is cheap additional square footage but with the frequent flooding we have been getting lately and the constant updates that are needed to the upper floors of old homes, I think people should think long and hard before considering a basement renovation and maybe just spend the money on some nice built-in cabinetry that will get them the storage they need without burying the utilities that lie in the basement.

It took us about two months to pull off this transformation plus the bathroom above. If the client would have chosen to live through this renovation, not that we really have her a choice, it would have added 3-4 weeks to the renovation and an easy 4-5k to the budget. There are always trade offs but if you want to stay in your house during a renovation rest assured you will have a longer and more expensive project.

Just take your iPhone or whatever garbage you use, put it on the widest camera setting and select self timer.. Then just pull down the cover for the exhaust fan and stuff your iPhone in.

I have been on a 20 year journey to find the most effective organizational system for renovations. I won’t say that I’ve tried everything but I’ve tried a lot. I’m not afraid to put my money where my mouth is if I think I found something that’s worthwhile and I’m also not afraid to bail on an idea when it starts to prove in efficient. I recently sold every one of these systainers in favor of something new. I am not sure what the replacement will be as we have started trying out both dewalt and Milwaukee offerings. That’s wonderful two manufacturers have realize the worth in good organization but I still feel like they aren’t willing to take it as far as I would when it comes to streamlining and systematizing tools. As the number of trades people dwindle it becomes ever more important to spend our hours using the tools not looking for them and that’s why I am always trying to eliminate waste and ineffective action. I am hoping to do a tool storage comparison video soon to show some of the pros and cons of every system I’ve used but I’ve been waiting until I have at least a year of testing under my belt before sharing my opinions.

Zachary Dettmore has been building things since he was a kid. He started at age nine, building lawn signs out of wood and giving them to his neighbors. After attending a timber framing school at thirteen, he decided to work in construction for the rest of his life. He started an apprenticeship which turned into a job and worked his way up to lead carpenter. He was always driven to start this business and knew that he could offer a truly unique service. He started Dettmore Home Improvements as a one man operation and it quickly grew by word of mouth. His passion to uplift the craft of carpentry has made Dettmore Home Improvements a magnet for like minded craftsmen who seek a company that values individuals who want to hone their craft.
