This has been an unprecedented storm with 8 inches of rain in approximately six hours. The ground was previously saturated from last week's storm and then IDA certainly didn’t help matters with high tide right around the untimely downpour. Homeowners woke the next morning to water flooding into their homes and had to figure out what to do.
10 THINGS I RECOMMEND YOU DO IF YOU HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY FLOOD WATERS
# 1 As soon as you possibly can get all the water out of your basement flooded area.
# 2 Contact your insurance broker/carrier and let them know that your property has been damaged by the recent storm. File a claim with them and make sure you get a claim number. Make an appointment asap for an adjuster to come out to evaluate the damage.
# 3 Document all damage caused by the flood. Take photographs of everything that was damaged and include every detail possible. The more documentation you have the quicker your claim is going to be processed.
# 4 Call an electrician and get them to evaluate the electrical circuits affected by the water. Do not attempt to use any of the circuits that may have been affected by water.
# 5 Contact your plumber if your hot water heater was located in a basement to make sure there was no damage caused by the flood, and if not re-ignite the pilot light.
# 6 If your air handling air conditioning and heating system is located in your basement, have your HVAC service mechanic immediately evaluate the system for any potential damage.
(You might also want to make sure that any water that has penetrated the duct system, both supply and returns, be cleaned out immediately. Some of the flood water might be contaminated so you want to make sure that it's not going to have any lingering effects.)
# 7 Place an immediate order for a dumpster with a carting company. All the affected contents that were ruined and damaged need to be discarded or removed as safely and as quickly as possible.
# 8 After documenting all water damaged contents and with consultation and agreement from your insurance company /broker, start putting all the damaged contents in the dumpster.
# 9 Remove all sheet rock 1 foot or more above the waterline exposing the studs behind. If there is insulation or sound proofing in the cavities also remove and place in the dumpster.
# 10 Thoroughly dry out the basement or damaged area as soon as possible, placing a couple of dehumidifiers in the area to dry it out to prevent any further damage or growth of mold.
Following these steps can minimize any further damage or possible growth of mold which could present health hazards.
