My helpers are shown here finishing the edges of a large sheet-mulching project we undertook today in Fruitridge Manor, to address an intense Bermuda grass infestation. With thanks to my gardener friend, Michael, and my client, Corinna for their many hot hours spent clearing the old irrigation lines, the raised beds, the w**d barrier fabric and the former English flower garden into a blank canvas for healthy soil and an ecologically friendly native garden in the future. I planted some California fuchsia and Asters to get things started. I call this work “lawn conversion therapy” - if it’s good for the land, it’s good for us !

I discovered an African acacia tree growing in Sacramento!! These trees are essential to savanna ecosystems and serve as vital guardians of arid and semi-arid landscapes across the globe, from the Sahara to the Australian outback.

The Acacia is a remarkable genus in the legume family defined by its symbiotic relationship with rhizobia bacteria. Through nitrogen fixation in its root nodules, the tree converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, essentially becoming a self-fertilizing organism. When its leaves fall or roots decompose, these nutrients enrich the surrounding soil and restore fertility to the land.

In addition to these biological benefits, they are also beautiful and highly drought-tolerant.

Showcasing wildflowers in bloom on Mt. Tam on May 1, overlooking San Francisco Bay — a stark contrast to the distant hills to the east of Napa and Sonoma all the way through Fairfield and Vacaville, where native ecology was cleared to grow grass for cattle. So much of California’s natural landscape has been devastated by that history. I prefer the native plants to any others

Removing invasive Bermuda grass from a buffalo-grass lawn was today's mission. It was tough, but now I can identify a few grass species. They're definitely not as straightforward as other plants!

Off trail in the woods near Sly Park where the Caldor fire raged right up to the edge of Jenkinson Lake and the creek below the dam, the land is being cleared. Blackened trees lay on the ground everywhere and the hillside across the valley is completely barren. But there is still life under bark and rocks and leaves. The massive old growth sugar-pine is black but living and is a resting place for buzzards. Little manzanitas and oaks are popping up everywhere. I found a single lily. I saw a doe and a jackrabbit that I first thought was its fawn. A longtime resident told me the fire was likely started by a CalFire-fighter who wanted more work

Spring blooming native wildflowers including clarkia, phacelia, buckwheat, yarrow, ceanothus, fuchsia, poppies and blue eyed grass in this little plot at a home in Greenhaven/Pocket neighborhood where the soil is a gray, sticky clay and native plants find it totally delicious. Many of these plants were purchased from last fall and they are doing incredibly well here. I love my job

Yesterday I was pruning rosemary in Arden Park and stumbled upon a secret mushroom party. I felt bad crashing it, so I took a few pics to apologize for ruining the vibe. But honestly, those rosemary plants needed a haircut - they were getting a bit wild. Without regular pruning, they'd be moldy and rodent central. Now they'll be clean, happy, and full of new growth and flowers for spring pollinators
