Process Post! I made about a dozen of these baddies today. Kokedama is a Japanese art form for growing and displaying plants. Typically covered in moss, I use coco fiber basket liners as they are easier to work with, and moss can be difficult to source.
Start by collecting basket liner, soil, and a couple of different sized bowls. This run is made with Orchids, so naturally, I used Orchid bark. I used , which is , so they would be found growing on trees in their native environment.
Coco liners and generally multiple layers of fibers so gently pull them apart or cut them until they are large enough to cover the root ball. Press the liner down into the bowl, layering as needed. Fill the liner part way with your soil, I also used to retain a little more moisture.
To prep the plant, knock off original soil or other planting material that's surrounding its roots. Nurseries use different soils, moss, and coir at different stages of the plants growth. Most likely, you will find straight spagnum if you're using an orchid you bought at a grocery store or received as a gift. Mound the new soil in and around so the plant has some new medium to grow in.
Press the root ball down into your prepared liner and gather the liner around the base of the plant. You can be really abusive with Orchids, but just consider the hardiness of the plants' roots.
Take string or fishing wire and tie around the liner until it is a solid unit. I use sisal rope (yucca), but jute, h**p, or even fishing wire will work. I tend to prefer natural materials over synthetic, but you do you.
Find a cool bowl or Macrame to display your new creation in!
Some people mist their Kokedama daily, but I prefer to submerge mine in fish tank water when I water all my other plants on tank cleaning day. If you opt to use live moss to cover your root ball, you will need to water more frequently.
The last step is to clean this giant mess you made from doing rhis in your kitchen. You probably needed to mop anyway
