CAIBD California Institute of Building Design The California Institute of Building Design CAIBD is dedicated to the integrity of the practice of building design and the professionalism of our members.

History of the American Institute of Building Design

AIBD Background & History

Since 1950, the American Institute of Building Design has provided members with the resources they need to enhance performance and ensure continued growth and success. The AIBD was initially formed in the 1950 by a group of California designers as a means of improving design standards to the highest level and to promo

te credibility and public awareness. Many of our state societies have had independent organizations dating form the late 1940's and early 1950's. Now the nationally recognized association of professional building designers, the AIBD represents members in 47 states and has 23 chartered state societies as well as a growing membership in Canada and internationally. Because of interest and expertise, as well as individual state statutes, most AIBD members specialize in custom residential and light commercial projects. Our members are required to comply with states statutes and to follow guidelines established by regional building codes. Our membership is recognized and supported by various state home builder associations by the Farmers Home Administration. Many of our members are also approved to certify plans for Federal Housing Administration and Veteran's Administration on an individual basis. Many AIBD members serve on individual metropolitan area planning commissions and various municipal code review boards. The national headquarters for AIBD is incorporated as a non-profit professional corporation and maintains its headquarters in Washington DC. The AIBD is governed nationally by its board of directors, elected from eligible members of the state societies and members at large. State societies are chartered by the national board of directors after a minimum membership of 12 professional designers is established in one state. After being chartered, state societies may form chapters in compliance with the by laws of the Institute.

Hello friends of CAIBD,

Today at our membership meeting, a quorum of members decided to close the non-profit corporation of the California Institute of Building Design. The vote was unanimous except for one abstention. The compelling reason for this decision was that for three years we have not complied by our own by-laws of holding regular meetings and engaging with our membership. We are out of compliance on how a non-profit corporation is required to operate.

For the process of closing CAIBD, Richard Emigh will be the Acting-Secretary, Patti VanGelder will be the Treasurer and I will represent the President. The two tasks at hand will be for final bills to be paid, and closing the corporate charter with the state of California. Also, we have decided to have a “last gathering”, likely at F***y Ann’s in Sacramento (restaurant designed by Rich Wilken), at a date in the future. All previous members are welcome to this gathering. Stay in touch with the CAIBD page ( https://www.facebook.com/calibuilddesign/ ) for more news and decisions about the gathering.

It was decided at the meeting that any CAIBD funds that remain after the closing of the corporation will be donated to AIBD (national) and the California chapter of the Habitat for Humanity, on a 50/50 basis.

While the closing of the CAIBD is a sad decision, it also makes me reflect on everything we have done with each other - the seminars, architectural tours, conferences, discussions, (friendly) arguments, celebrations, and comradery. We have all gained from being with each other over all these years. I am deeply grateful to all of you for all that we have done, learned and shared.

With that, sharing can still continue in other forms. Most of us are still members of AIBD national and have enduring friendships with others from CAIBD. These connections can and do last. I look forward to continuing those relationships and enjoy learning from each other.

My very best regards to all of you,

Clay Johnson

Since we got off on the subject of old versus young growth wood quality the other day - and what an interesting post that was with loads of great comments from all sides - I thought you might like to see what many of those comments were talking about. Thanks to Rob Latham we know "both are Oregon, Lower is Back sawn Admiralty grade, (12 growth rings per inch with no fall in the length) top is plantation grown and not a good sample." I assume by "not a good sample" he means Home Depot grade A

THE POTENTIAL IMPACT OF STUDENT LOAN DEBT FORGIVENESS ON THE HOUSING MARKET
Surveys of renting millennials each of the past six years, four of the five top reasons why millennials have not become homeowners are related to affordability, says Zonda chief economist Ali Wolf. In particular, millennials cite the inability to save for a down payment and the existence of student loans as two of their homeownership hurdles.
