A reminder that salt's effectiveness is reduced when temperatures get into single digits and below 0. Brine helps salt get to work faster but what melts also begins to refreeze that much faster because of the lower temps.

Sand is used in certain areas, mostly rural areas where there are no drainage systems featuring mechanical pumps (the sand in the runoff can destroy those pumps).

Slow down and keep following Michigan's Basic Speed Law, which may mean driving much slower than the posted speed limit to ensure safe stopping distance ahead.

As snowfall commences in Mid-Michigan, we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to allow crews additional space and time to perform their duties.
Snow crews work extended hours, beginning in the early morning hours to ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely.
During these high rate snow events, keeping pavement clear can require multiple visits, prioritizing higher traffic areas, walkways, and main entrances, as well as piling snow in multiple locations on site.
