A painted kitchen island, or stair risers for that "floating tread" look can do alot to alter the feel of an interior. Smaller details can help lighten and brighten any interior space.

This was one of the darkest, grayest homes I'd ever seen. Even the ceilings were gray. I flipped the trim and door casings to white, while leaving some wood tones for touches of warmth. Crisp white ceilings with an autumnal palette have completely transformed this interior into a place of welcoming.

What do you think of the look of this railing? Experimental faux/distressed has a certain dramatic flair...
