This entry feature project has an interesting story. The contractor working on the project reached out to me after receiving a pergola entry feature design from another company. The contractor’s concerns were the ability to build based on the design since it featured a gable roof that might’ve blocked the window above the entry, as well as some concerns around the practicality of the framing. My first thought was that although the pergola design was nice, it didn’t fit the aesthetics of the existing home, so my first move was to schedule a site visit to be sure.

During the site visit I walked around the subdivision with the customer and we looked at similar style homes and during the conversation, it turned out the gable-style roof on the proposed entry design wasn’t the customers’ original vision. Together, we came up with an entry feature that reflected their style and the aesthetics of the home.

The finished project is a beautiful entry feature, executed by Josh and his team at Atlas Building & Repair Solutions, that the customer is absolutely delighted to have as the entry feature to their home, but don’t take my word for it. The customer sent me a text once the project was done which I’ve included below (with her permission).

“Thank you for the architectural input! You were so right. We’re happy we didn’t do the gable style and went with the lesser pitch compared to our neighbors. We appreciate your expertise!!!” - Madeline O.

Lately I’ve been going to more projects west of St. Louis County, and I’m a believer in supporting local, so when I end up at a job site in an area I'm not familiar with I find a local place to eat lunch. Last week I ended up in Warrenton, and I picked The Corner Pub for lunch. What an excellent decision! The Corner Pub has amazing food and great service. I highly recommend it!

Now, here's the real point of this post - I’d like a little help so I can continue supporting local restaurants. When I end up in your area, where do I need to go for lunch? It's been really exciting to watch this project unfold and now it's finished just in time for summer! This is the project that's a Big Bend Landscaping collab that I shared earlier this month.

Change is a part of life and sometimes your home needs an update to reflect those life changes. Shortly after this couple purchased their home they found out they were expecting. I helped them design an addition to meet their current needs, which includes adding two bedrooms, another bathroom, and a first floor laundry room. When construction is completed, they'll have enough space to support their growing family.

Continuing our discussion on as-built projects, this is an example of an addition where there’s more than meets the eye in terms of design. Some addition projects can have design hurdles to overcome because you are taking the existing structure and design into consideration.

For this project the challenge was getting the roof structure over the existing window, (see the picture on the left), but under the adjacent soffit (see photo on the right). These projects require a site visit to measure the existing conditions, then I draw it in Auto CAD to figure out the space we have to work with, and in collaboration with an engineer design the support to fit within the space we have to ensure the details are right.

I love how this project worked out, and in this case the project was flawlessly executed by Big Bend Landscaping.

I love seeing projects I've drawn completed, like this upgraded outdoor space. Lakeside Renovation & Design did a fantastic job with this project and I'm sure the homeowner is already spending a lot more time enjoying the backyard!

The first step in most home projects is to as-build the existing space. Whether it be an addition to your existing home, a basement finish or even a new outdoor deck and/or overhang. By knowing the existing conditions of the space, we can create an accurate depiction of what your project will look like.

If you look at the attached drawings, sheet G2 depicts the existing kitchen and master bedroom where the addition ties into the existing house. The other drawing on this sheet depicts the existing basement below the master bedroom and kitchen.

Sheet G3 depicts the existing basement with the renovations we're making as well as the new foundation that will go in below the addition.

Sheet G4 depicts the existing space with the renovations to the existing kitchen and existing bedroom as well as the addition of the larger kitchen and the new master suite.
