💡 Did You Know? Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Costing You Money

One of the most common HVAC questions we receive is: “What temperature should I set my thermostat during summer?”

For most Wisconsin homeowners, setting your thermostat between 74°F and 78°F while you’re home provides a good balance of comfort and energy efficiency. Raising the temperature just a few degrees when you’re away can significantly reduce cooling costs without putting unnecessary strain on your air conditioner.

Here are a few additional energy-saving tips:

✔ Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day
✔ Use ceiling fans to improve comfort and airflow
✔ Avoid running ovens and dryers during peak afternoon heat
✔ Replace dirty air filters regularly
✔ Have your HVAC system professionally maintained each year

A properly maintained air conditioning system doesn’t just cool better—it operates more efficiently, experiences fewer breakdowns, and often lasts years longer than neglected equipment.

At Third Coast Heating & Cooling, we’re committed to educating homeowners throughout Southeastern Wisconsin so they can make informed decisions about their home’s comfort system.

Questions about your AC system, indoor air quality, or energy efficiency? We’re always happy to help.

🏠 HVAC INDUSTRY CHANGES ARE COMING: WHAT WISCONSIN HOMEOWNERS NEED TO KNOW IN 2026

The heating and cooling industry is experiencing some of the biggest changes we’ve seen in decades. Between new refrigerant regulations, increasing energy efficiency standards, rising utility costs, and advancements in smart home technology, homeowners who stay informed will save money and avoid costly surprises.

❄️ New Refrigerants Are Replacing Older Systems

The HVAC industry has begun transitioning away from older refrigerants in favor of newer, environmentally friendly options. While this is a positive step for the future, it also means replacement parts and refrigerant for some older systems may become more expensive and harder to source over time.

If your air conditioner is 10+ years old, now is a great time to understand your options before an emergency replacement becomes necessary.

⚡ Energy Costs Continue to Rise

Utility costs across Wisconsin have steadily increased, making HVAC efficiency more important than ever. Many homeowners don’t realize that a poorly maintained system can use 15-30% more energy than a properly serviced one.

Simple steps like changing filters, cleaning outdoor coils, sealing ductwork, and scheduling annual maintenance can significantly reduce monthly operating costs.

📱 Smart Technology Is Becoming Standard

Modern HVAC systems can now communicate with homeowners through smart thermostats and monitoring technology. These tools help identify issues early, improve comfort, and reduce wasted energy.

The homeowners who embrace these technologies often see lower utility bills and fewer unexpected breakdowns.

🔧 Preventative Maintenance Is More Important Than Ever

As equipment becomes more advanced, preventative maintenance isn’t just recommended—it’s essential. Small issues caught during routine inspections often prevent major repairs during Wisconsin’s hottest summer days and coldest winter nights.

Many expensive repairs start as inexpensive maintenance items that go unnoticed.

💡 How To Stay Ahead Of The Curve

✔ Schedule annual HVAC inspections
✔ Change filters regularly
✔ Consider upgrading aging equipment before it fails
✔ Ask about high-efficiency equipment options
✔ Invest in programmable or smart thermostat technology
✔ Work with a contractor who keeps up with industry changes

At Third Coast Heating & Cooling, we believe informed homeowners make better decisions. Our goal isn’t just to repair equipment—we want to educate our customers on how to maximize comfort, improve efficiency, and protect their investment for years to come.

If you have questions about your current HVAC system, refrigerant changes, maintenance plans, or energy-saving upgrades, our team is here to help.

Professional & Educational

Your air conditioner’s coils are responsible for transferring heat out of your home. When dirt, dust, pollen, and debris build up on the coils, the system has to work harder to cool your home. This leads to higher energy bills, reduced comfort, increased wear and tear, and a shorter equipment lifespan.

Regular coil cleaning helps:
✅ Improve energy efficiency
✅ Lower utility costs
✅ Enhance cooling performance
✅ Reduce strain on system components
✅ Extend the life of your HVAC system

A clean coil is one of the simplest ways to keep your air conditioner running at peak performance.

☀️ What To Do When Your Air Conditioner Stops Cooling This Summer

When temperatures rise across Southeastern Wisconsin, the last thing any homeowner wants is an air conditioner that can’t keep up. Before calling for service, here are a few simple troubleshooting steps that may help restore comfort and potentially save you a service call.

✅ 1. Check Your Thermostat
Make sure your thermostat is set to COOL and the temperature setting is lower than the current room temperature. Replace batteries if applicable.

✅ 2. Inspect Your Air Filter
A dirty filter restricts airflow and can cause your system to struggle or even freeze up. Replace filters every 1-3 months during peak cooling season.

✅ 3. Check Your Circuit Breaker
If your outdoor unit isn’t running, check your electrical panel to ensure the AC breaker hasn’t tripped.

✅ 4. Look for Ice on Refrigerant Lines
If you notice ice on the copper lines or indoor coil, turn the system OFF and switch the fan to ON. A frozen system needs time to thaw before diagnosis.

✅ 5. Clear Debris Around the Outdoor Unit
Grass clippings, leaves, and weeds can restrict airflow. Keep at least 2 feet of clearance around your condenser.

✅ 6. Check Air Vents Throughout Your Home
Make sure supply and return vents are open and unobstructed by furniture, rugs, or curtains.

⚠️ If your system is still not cooling properly, it’s time to have it professionally evaluated. Ignoring small issues can lead to costly repairs or complete system failure during the hottest days of summer.

At Third Coast Heating & Cooling, we provide professional AC diagnostics, repairs, maintenance, and system replacements throughout Brookfield, Germantown, Waukesha, Menomonee Falls, New Berlin, Pewaukee, Sussex, Hartland, Delafield, and surrounding Southeastern Wisconsin communities.

As summer temperatures climb across Brookfield, Germantown, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Menomonee Falls, New Berlin, Pewaukee, Hartland, Delafield, and Oconomowoc, your air conditioner becomes one of the hardest-working systems in your home.

Here are 5 simple ways to improve comfort, lower energy costs, and reduce the risk of unexpected AC breakdowns:

✅ Replace your air filter every 30-90 days to maintain proper airflow and indoor air quality.

✅ Keep at least 24 inches of clearance around your outdoor air conditioning unit by removing weeds, grass clippings, and debris.

✅ Set your thermostat to a consistent temperature to help your cooling system operate more efficiently.

✅ Check supply vents throughout your home to ensure furniture, rugs, or curtains aren’t restricting airflow.

✅ Schedule annual air conditioning maintenance to identify worn components before they lead to costly repairs.

Many homeowners don’t realize that reduced airflow, longer cooling cycles, uneven temperatures, and increasing electric bills are often early warning signs that an AC system needs professional attention.

At Third Coast Heating & Cooling, our certified HVAC technicians provide professional AC maintenance, air conditioning repair, AC installation, furnace service, heat pump solutions, and complete HVAC system replacements throughout Southeast Wisconsin.

Here are five common signs your AC may need replacement:

An aging or inefficient air conditioner often works harder to cool your home, increasing utility costs.

Hot and cold spots can indicate your system is no longer capable of maintaining consistent comfort.

✔ Strange Noises or Odors
Grinding, squealing, or musty smells may signal serious internal issues that could warrant replacement.

At Third Coast Heating & Cooling, we provide professional AC inspections, honest recommendations, and expert air conditioner installation throughout Brookfield, New Berlin, Waukesha, Germantown, Menomonee Falls, Pewaukee, and surrounding Southeastern Wisconsin communities.
