Regular monitoring of your lawn and garden can help you spot early signs of heat stress or insect damage before they become bigger problems.
☀️Beating Heat and Drought Stress
• Mowing Height: Keep your mower deck high (3–4 inches). Taller blades retain soil moisture and naturally shade from intense heat.
• Watering Schedule: Lawns require 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. Water early in the morning (4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.) to minimize evaporation and avoid evening moisture that breeds fungus.
• Heat Tracks: Avoid heavy walking or driving heavy equipment on the lawn during the heat of the afternoon. Heat-stressed turf will bruise and leave yellow tracks.
• Fertilization: Avoid applying heavy nitrogen fertilizers during extreme heat. Wait until late August to apply heavy feedings.
🐛 Insect Control
• Grub Prevention: Mid-July is the ideal window to apply preventive grub control products. Apply before rain or watering to push treatment to the root zone.
• Spot Treatment: For areas of visible damage, like patchy turf or increased moth/beetle activity near the soil line, always identify the specific pest before applying pesticide.
