Today, opening the shop was a little more special than most mornings, today I opened it 25 years to the day that I did it for the first time ever, 5/9/01.
I want to take this space to just say thank you to everyone who has supported us in those 25 years. I hope the next 25 are just as much fun.
I was 28 when my Pop and I started digging holes to put up the fence. My dear friend and surrogate uncle, Tony Ashworth, was right there with us as well. He’s still with me here today.
The level of gratitude I have for you guys is something I just can’t get across with words. I’ve known since I was 7 that I wanted to make statues. My parents knew a family at Lake Of The Ozarks who did it and the first time I saw their operation, I knew it was what I wanted to do. They loaned us four molds in 1979, three of which, I still use today. Without you, I’d have no reason to use them at all.
I announced the upcoming opening in March 2001 at the Flower Show at Civic Arena. I had a booth there filled with everything I could fit. Opening a business was scary and I wanted to make a good first impression. I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ll never forget this one man who stopped and asked about my stuff. He said “22nd & Mitchell? That’s a hole in the ground. You’ll never sell statues or anything else there.” - How ya like me now, man?
We have at least one piece in all 50 states and in the gardens of some really amazing people; Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, Charlie Benante from Anthrax, Loretta Lynn, and more. One of the most special though, is in upstate NY with Anne Serling, daughter of Rod Serling, whose work I named my business after. Most importantly though, you. All of you.
It’s been a ride and it’s kept us in tacos. I’ve made some wonderful friends and I feel like we’ve touched some lives. People say the most amazing things and I wouldn’t trade any of it. Thank you for allowing me to do the only thing I know how to do well. The thing I, for some reason, have to do…. Making concrete frogs.
I love you for enabling my dream.
I love you for the support.
I love you for the kind words.
I love you for making Twilight Gardens real.
Bless your hearts.
Let’s go for 50, wanna?
With sincere appreciation,
All my best,
Todd
