This water heater is approximately 25 years old.
The cost of changing a water heater is approximately$1200. That can vary drastically depending on things like location and updating the gas fittings and water fittings and sometimes venting if it is a gas water heater.
In the first picture is the upper element of a two element water heater. The red and black wire on the right side of the picture will go down to the lower element. The black and red wire on the left side of the picture will come in from the top of the water heater which is the 220 volt supply.
There is approximately 1.5" of insulation between the tank and the outer jacket.
In the second picture you can see the element protruding into the tank. The outside of the element is pictured in the first frame and has the blue and white wire.
Also in the second picture is the fill tube which is the 1/2" diameter tube running next to the element. The purpose of this is to dispense cold water at the bottom of the tank. Naturally hot water rises that way cold water does not get mixed with the hot water that is at the top of the tank and dilute it. To the right of the fill tube looks like a wire but it is actually a sacrificial anode rod that has pretty much been depleted.
The Anode Rod is a serviceable part. Depending on various parameters of your water makeup it should be checked approximately every two years.
If you have a rotten egg smell to your hot water there is an anode rod that can be used which pretty much eliminates that smell.

In the following three pictures you will see the sediment that has accumulated over the 25 years. Now this will vary tremendously depending on the makeup of your water.

When I changed this water heater there was no way to drain it with the drain plug at the bottom with all the sediment that has built up over the years. I had to resort to other methods to remove the water because this was in the attic and no way it could have been moved with it full of water.

The water heaters being produced today have a much better draining system that can usually handle the sediment but not always.
That is about one gallon of sediment pulled out of this tank.

Water heaters usually come preset at 120 degrees. In the last picture you can see how long it takes to damage your skin with various temperatures of water.
